He got better as the preseason progressed. No reason to think that won't continue as he keeps learning.
He definitely looked better against the Raiders, but he was going up against a lot of players on the cutline. It’s going to be a lot different this weekend when the real bullets start flying against starters for 4 quarters. I’m not expecting him to play great, I’m just hoping he plays decently and shows some of the things that made him a first round draft pick.

Hard to have dominant defenses anymore, all of them, including the top ranked units, have weaknesses in them if the OL can at least give the QB time. Salary cap and rules set up to help offenses. You just have to have an opportunistic defense who can shut down or contain an offense in key moments of the game. But i think Dallas could have a top 5 defense.

Well, I picked them in my fantasy league so I would hope so.

We will see. However I think it’s a mistake comparing them to doomsday or the 90s defense…it’s an entirely different game and league now. Offense is too heavy, they don’t need to be those defense for us to be very very good and if those are the barometer or bar they’ll like disappoint
I really think we have the pass rushers, CBs and Safeties to dominate on defense if we can simply stop the run and make teams one-dimensional. But stopping the run continues to be an issue.

may not be able to tell from game 1.
Its actually not much different then last year. Different is Clarke is more ready, Wilson is out, Williams is banged up, and we have Gillmore. I would say were better.

Giants are better as well.

Gotta stop the run consistently before we can be top 5.

I’ll be watching to see if the defense is truly a dominant unit anywhere near top defenses from the 70’s and 90’s in Dallas or like other dominant defenses. Or will they again be a bunch of great pass rushers making some big plays, but still allowing long drives and struggling against the run. I started a thread this morning which some of you got shut down before I could come home from work and golf to respond….lol. Way to go!

One comment asked what I expect Mike and Brian to do that Linehan, Garrett, and Moore didn’t do? Duh, hate to be insulting, but for over a decade I’ve listened to fans complain about our outdated offense and heard defenses (including SF) say they knew what we were running before the snap and often ran the routes better than our receivers, so yes, I’m expecting more of the west coast offense, more screens, more FB, more short passes and YAC, and lots more picks and bunch plays. No more 3 receivers all running 5-7 yard curls at the same time.

Another comment acted like I started another Dak thread….ummm, the title had Dak’s name in it, but it was clearly notifying anyone reading the title that I was hoping to avoid that topic, and the thread was more about how I think the defense has something to prove too. It’s one thing to be a good defense with lots of pass rushers and takeaways. It’s another thing to be an elite defense that actually dominates the opposition and forces lots of punting and a lopsided time of possession. I keep hoping our defense is approaching being more than opportunistic, better than playing complimentary football. Maybe that’s asking a lot, but I’m hoping.
Easy answer. STOP USING HIS NAME. Especially in threads that are not about him.

Great run teams will pound us. And teams with running QB's as well. That will be the test.

I’m not as worried about running QB’s as I’m worried about the between the tackle runs by good running offenses. I think overall they do a pretty decent job containing the edges.

To be a dominant defense the Cowboys are going to have to dramatically improve against the run. They were 22nd against the run last season. You’re not going to be a great defense or team if you can’t contain the run. We can’t allow an opponent to impose their will on us. That catches up with you in the playoffs, if you make the playoffs.
I sincerely hope we can stiffen up against that run this year. Hopefully Mazi can help with that.
We're going to have a better team this year, but only a little time will tell just how much better we'll be.
But I fully agree with you about the need to contain the run. If we can't do that, we can kiss the rest of it goodbye.

In Dan Quinn we trust. I think our D will even set a major statement Sunday night. D Jones is old bones.

Mazi is definitely gonna have to be impactful against the run if we're gonna be successful defensively. I saw nothing in preseason from him. Philly's Oline is probably the best in the league. If he can't dominate 2nd and 3rd team guys, I don't know what he's gonna do against them. The rest of the defense looks very solid.

Hopefully we have a better team this year. Injuries can have a big affect on your season, so we have to stay relatively healthy. Opponents are going to attack us on the ground until we come up with an answer against the run.

No such thing as a dominant defense in the modern NFL.

That said, Dallas has the talent to be as good as any when playing with a lead, which is all you can ask for.

As is the case with every thread about the run defense, a whole lot of wrong about what the Cowboys' run defense was last year lol

IMHO….we’ll be in the top of the league as long as Parsons stays healthy. Mazi’s seasonal development will play a role in just how good we become. The offense will play a role…cut down on the 3 and outs.
