4th & Goal at DAL 2

Is there a big difference between Tyron Smith and Derek Sherrod?

It's a good question. If they played exactly the same but Sherrod had the abs, would people be rating them the same?

Carimi and Sherrod are both on the board but Smith and Castonzo are gone. Who do you take?

That's a good question.

My gut tells me to take Carimi.

Folks want to play it "safe" (easy to say, but what does that really mean anyways?) and like the thought of having versatile bookend tackles. Here's the problem though, let's just say Sherrod is our starter at RT and he gets injured. Free moves over to RT, but who fills in for his spot at LT? Answer: a backup. It would be no different of a problem if Free and Carimi were your starters and one of them got injured. Neither Free nor Sherrod can play two spots at once.

Your depth is only as good as your backups, not how versatile the starters are.

I like Carimi because he's a bull of run blocker and very good pass protector. I think he fits the bill of what Dallas has traditionally liked in it's tackles, although they may be changing their criteria. I really think Carimi helps this team in it's running game at the point of the attack.

Bottomline, in your scenerio I wouldn't be upset in the least if we took Sherrod. In fact, I was touting Sherrod a lot on these boards during the college season. Carimi just happens to really impress me when I watched him.

I suppose ideally we would want to draft an OT who could play both sides - esp a RT who could play LT if necessary. I feel a bit better with P Young's upside (in case he needed to fill in at RT) than Barron having to fill in at LT due to injury.

I sure hope the team has something in Sam Young. I'm not going to hold my breath, but it would be nice to think we hit on a lineman.

Carpenter was just a horrible pick and a horrible pick in a defense transitioning to a 34. Parcells' worst pick of his tenure here.
But at the TIME it was considered a good SAFE pick.

Right, but the question I have is, what if Free isn't the answer at LT? And then you draft a pure right tackle in the 1st round; you're stuck. You're back to the drawing board. At least with Sherrod, he has left tackle ability, and gives you flexibility INCASE Free isn't the answer at LT. We know Free can play RT as well. Sherrod is a very good run blocker as well. He really reminds me of a young Flozell, but much more athletic.

Who do you think will be available at #9 to be special for the D?

We're going to get a shot at 1 or maybe 2 of these defensive players. I know there are ones we won't get a shot at before people say no chance.

But out of the bunch we will see 1 or 2 of these players who are worth the pick and can help our defense.

Patrick Peterson
Marcell Dareus
Nick Fairley
DaQuan Bowers
Von Miller
Robert Quinn

Offense:

AJ Green
Julio Jones
Mark Ingram

These 9 players are the true studs of the draft and have top 10 value. 1 QB, possibly 2 QB's should get picked and probably both WR's in the top 10.

I know we don't need a WR and I know tackle is a more pressing need than RB. Ingram is going to shoot up closer to the top 10 and maybe in there.

Trade up from the 2nd to get the tackle at the bottom of the first or early 2nd. That's where the value is.

I would love to draft a tackle in the top 10. Would be a no brainer. But there is not one worthy of a top 10 pick. Top 15 I would not touch 1 in this draft.

I rather trade next years 1st for a late first in this years draft and grab Carimi or Sherrod than draft a tackle with the 9th pick or trade out of it to get 1.

Next year may have an even worse drought on blue chip tackle prospects. Our first rounder will be anywhere from 20-32 anyways next year.

I take Pouncey with the 17th and then Carimi or Sherrod with the other first. Maybe Muhammed Wilkerson with the later 1st rounder.

Gurode goes to guard and Pouncey plays center for us.

If we get the tackle then they go RT.

I wouldn't trade out of the 9th pick though. Can get a special player there for the defense.

Pouncey is not a Center, he is not his brother. POuncey may be the best OG in the draft but he is not a NFL center

Thanks for the response.

In my honest opinion, of the players you mentioned above, the only ones I see being available at #9 are Julio Jones and Mark Ingram. Coincidentally, WR and RB are not major needs for the Cowboys.

I agree with the value not being there for drafting a tackle in the top ten, but Tyron Smith's pro day just may change all that. He's considered a better prospect than Jason Smith, who went to the Ram's at #2 overall. He intrigues me.

If we get a solid offer by trading down to pick up an extra 2nd and a 4th, and we could still draft Cameron Jordan AND Derek Sherrod, sign me up! We could then address interior line and safety with players like Danny Watkins and Quinton Carter or Deunta Williams. I doubt Dallas wants to draft an injured safety again though. I think they like Carter.

Pouncey moved from right guard last year and played center this year for the Gators. He is considered a center/guard prospect.

I think he's the best OL prospect in this years draft for his play, not because of who his twin brother is. Although his genes don't hurt.

I'd definitely take C Jordan and Sherrod vs the 9th overall pick as well. That would be great, imo.

As for Q Carter, if we could get him in the 3rd I'd be fine with that. I've seen where some have him as a (low) 2nd rounder though.

No problem man!

I think Fairley and/or Quinn is going to be there in all honesty.

Tennessee will not take Fairley like all the mocks are suggesting now. Denver takes Dareus over Fairley at this point. Buffalo is not grabbing either Dareus or Fairley.

Bowers will be fine and will go either 1st or 2nd overall. I believe Denver gets him. John Fox is a 4-3 coach and he's going to want to build his defense around the pass rusher like he did in Carolina.

Bowers is not Julius Peppers but he's like Mario Williams.

I also think Hostile is right when he says Peterson falls to 6, even though I would take him #1 overall if I'm Carolina.

Carolina either go's QB (Gabbert or Newton), Bowers, or Marcell Dareus. I believe this because they need a QB and Newton would give them a player to sell to their fans. If they go defensive, Rivera is not going to want to build his defense around a corner, even though Peterson is the best prospect in the draft.

Rivera can coach a 4-3 and 3-4 both effectively and depending on his personnel will decide on what his base defense will be. That's why Dareus is a strong possibility because he can play DT in a 4-3 and all over the line in a 3-4. All effectively. Bowers is obviously that franchise DE a 4-3 defense would covet. These are players a guy like Rivera would want to build his defense around.

Carolina only go's offense with the first pick if it is a QB. They seem to prefer Newton over Gabbert at this point.

Regarding Tyron Smith. He's got great feet and a long reach. That's what he's got. Otherwise, watching his game tape. I don't like him 1 bit. There is no pocket with the guy. You would think that long reach would help him in that regard but it doesn't. He's constantly bull rushed and forced into the pocket.

Don't know about him being a better prospect than Baker. At least Baker played LT and was a very good tackle in college.

I agree he is the top interior OL and yes he did switch to center this year but he didn't play great. Pouncey best spot on the OL is OG not center.

not work in my book

say Romo goes down the 2nd game

out for the season we go 1 - 15

so you traded away our chance at Luck

who is the most NFL ready QB I seen in years - since Troy - IMO

Derek Sherrod

Sherrod is a 4th year senior. Coming out of high school he was a 4-star player who was recruited by most of the SEC schools as well as Notre Dame and Michigan. He was a three-year starter for the Bulldogs at left tackle. He has excellent size for an NFL tackle measuring 6-5 and 321 pounds with very long arms (35 3/8) and huge hands (11). He runs well for a big guy (5.24) and has very good balance to go along with good overall athleticism. He has good bend and is quick to change direction.

He plays out of both a 2-point and 3-point stance with good snap reaction and initial quickness. He is a consistently good run blocker who shows the power to get movement and the athleticism to get to the second level. He has some nasty in his play and I like the way he runs his feet and looks to finish blocks. In pass protection, he sets quickly and shows good lateral agility. He moves his feet well, stays in balance and can recover versus counter moves. He can get tall at times but that is more because he can get lazy with his technique than not being able to bend. I have seen enough plays where he has very good knee bend and anchor ability. He plays with a good base and you seldom see him give ground versus bull rushes. His hand use is good, he shows he can have a compact punch, but you do see him windup at times. He generally does a good job of keeping his hands inside.
Overall, Sherrod will eventually become a winning left tackle in the league. Some teams may start him off on the right side while he gains experience but he has the traits to play on the left side. The more tape I watched of this player the more I liked him. He has range and athleticism to go along with long arms…all traits needed to become an effective left tackle in the league.

I feel like he fits what we need exactly. I like going with production over potential in college. Give me Sherrod.
