Always thought the 2007 teams wins the SB if Terry Glenn had been healthy all season…

I ask this because it appears our hopes have elevated to its highest level this era.

We have had some #1 seeds like in 2007 and 2016. But I don’t recall this type of vibe as we are having now with these lofty expectations .

Back then like in 2007 it was Romo’s first full season and Phillips debut coaching here. And in 2016 was Prescotts rookie year.

This year feels different. McCarthy is in his 3rd season here and Prescott in his 7th season. And we finally have a legit defense in what appears to have been our biggest weakness throughout this era when it was our offenses which carried us to much of what success we had.

Big difference in comparison though is we will not likely be a #1 seed. And probably be a Wild Card needing to win all of our playoff games on the road. How much effect does this have. And what impact should this have on our lofty expectations.

And if we don’t have any more success by reaching our first championship game this era with what many see as our most talented team , will this be the most disappointing season?
I think this is a very good team with potential to win it all. Here’s what I think about this team:
  • Best defense we’ve had since the 90s.
  • Offense is good enough although not great.
  • Other than Micah Parsons, this team is not “star dependent”. It will win or lose because of the TEAM’S overall performance, not the QB or some other player.
  • Unless Filly falters (which could happen) the Cowboys are going to have to be playoff road warriors. It is very hard to win multiple road playoff games.
  • Winning in the playoffs requires way more than talent. It’s about being fundamentally sound- blocking, tackling, taking care of the ball, and most importantly being mentally tough to overcome adversity.
  • My expectations are this team SHOULD advance to at least the NFC championship game. Whether they will or not probably exists between their ears.
  • The biggest monkey this team has on its back is the last 27 years.
I have hope with this team. But until they actually get the 27 year old monkey off their backs, I also have doubts. This owner and his self created circus nonsense has to be overcome every year. Sooner or later it’s going to happen in spite of Jerry, not because of him. Hopefully this year.

The 2007 team was the best, most talented team since the SB years. That team had 22 players who made at least one pro bowl in their career and 10 who made at least one all-pro team. That is a STACKED roster.

It was one of the five best teams ever to not at least make it to the SB IMO

I think the above proves the point of this thread.

1. You can have a historically all-time great and undefeated team and still lose the SB.
2. A hot team is more dangerous in the playoffs than a great team on paper.

We've been on the other side of point #2 so many times over the years. I for one would like to be the team that goes on a roll at the right time. That Philly game in a few weeks.will tell us a lot.
Right. This is what gives me hope that the Eagles won't win the Super Bowl this year (which, if we can't win the SB, will be my runner up SB lol). What are the chances that they can remain hot for 20 weeks in a row?

Me too. The only issue with the 2007 team was had we made it to the Super Bowl, we would have had to play one of the best teams of all team in the Patriots. Who had beat the breaks off us earlier in the same season. The Giants got hot and had the kryptonite to beat them

That Giants team is probably the most underrated in the history of the NFL. They went 10-6 with a struggling Eli; winning something like 5 games when his rating was under 60.

On top of that, had they not faced off with Dallas twice, they likely would have been a 12-4-ish team.

The next season, 2008, they were virtually the same team and went 11-1 to start the year, beating all 4 conference championship teams in the process.

The only notable difference between the 08 and 07 giants was that they LOST HOF’er Michael Strahan to retirement.

It's hard to say. I got 2007 and 2014 in that order. This season isn't done yet. By the end I'll have a better idea where this team fits in. At the very least it's 3rd. If Dallas wins out, I'm pretty sure it will be 1st.
Have we ever had a 14 win team? That would be awesome.

The further away we get, it’s easy to forget how stacked that 07 team was.

It was a foregone conclusion they’d be in the super bowl once they throttled GB, the “2nd best” NFC team that year.

They just ran into a buzzsaw with the Giants. So did the 18-0 Patriots.

Crap luck

What makes this team different to me is the pass rush. We haven’t had a strong pass rush in 30 years. In the last 10 years we have had some really good offenses but our defenses were soft. Romo would get us ahead late and the defense wouldn’t be able to get a stop… That is why I have more optimism this year in general.

Never. We have the chance this year, but only because they added another game. Most wins is 13, and best win percentage was when Dallas was 12-2. That's still better than 14-3.

We came SO close to beating the Giants; it would have been a very fascinating SB.
However BB vs wade Phillips is about as bad a mismatch as you can get; defensively not so much but in every other way...

It's been an up and down season. The defense is great. The offense has been inconsistent this year. Sure we can beat up who we have to. The real measuring stick game for me is how we will do against the Eagles. So far 2014 Cowboys has been the must successful team we've had in awhile. Wish that team would've had this Defense.

Nothing proved yet! Have to beat the eagles, 49ers, Bucs, and Vikes again to really prove we have it. Then we have to tackle the AFC champion. Tall order for the 1 and done
Dak boys.

Exactly

Yes, this is the most talent we've had at all the positions

but in the past under Garrett we had VERY talented teams a franchise QB and all the pieces needed

McCarthy wins a SB with Romo i believe

This Cowboys team vs otherCowboys teams in the past few decades?
The current offense is NOT more talented, but they are talented.
The defense is the most talented group since the 90’s. That’s what gives me hope.

that is the perfect reply imo

Yeah I didn’t think we could beat the Pats that year.

That was part of the crap luck.

Of course. So, how would you rank the disappointment up against other talented teams this era which fizzled out in playoffs?

Disappointment? I grew numb to the losing many years ago. If they fall flat on their faces yet again I won't be disappointed in the least because I don't expect this team to do any better than any of the teams since 1995. Call me a crappy fan if you want, but nearly 30 years of nothing will do that to you.

I think 2007 was the last time I was disappointed with the team. Hollywood Romo and his stupid trip to Cabo helped crap away the #1 seed. They had the talent to go all the way but clearly weren't taking anything seriously.

The defense is young and getting scarier every week they can compete with anybody. Every week they're learning each other's tendencies and fitting better together.
The wild card is dak everybody knows it
I promise you against difficult defense he is going to struggle the question is do we have enough with the offensive line and running game 2 overcome him.
