Is this D for real or not?

We’ll start finding out a lot about the defense in the coming weeks starting next week. We’ve gotten through the soft part of our schedule now it’s going to get tough.

Three stellar games vs one stinker. I'll say that we're pretty good. Our weakness seems to be mobile zone read type qb's. Let's see how we fair vs a bully next week.

No. Not good stopping run. Not good covering wr. Next week could get ugly for us

I mean if they can focus on stopping the run on early downs they can be good. I think you're right though the next couple weeks they'll have their hands full.. 49ers, chargers, eagles on the road. Let's see how they do.

To be honest I think runs up the middle we've been ok. It's the outside stuff that's killed us. That means our guys outside can't be rushing up field and have to maintain discipline. Against teams like the 49ers or eagles you let the qb beat you with his arm if you can.

We’ll know after the SF game, I’m not expecting dominant but solid at least.

Again it's not really on Mazi or Hankins. It's the outside runs, the over running of plays that killed us against Arizona, and have killed us against mobile qbs.

If the outside guys aren't going to maintain discipline then you're gonna be in for a long day.

Cowboys have to contain everything, make them either run it up the guy toward your big guys, or throw it. If you have to be a step slow on early downs in the pass rush so be it. Run defense will lead to those 3rd and long sack attempts.

Interestingly enough I saw a couple drives today where we had Mazi and I think Hankins in together. Although I could be wrong. I thought I saw it on the LVE td drive.

Contain CMC, and of course Deebo. Maybe Bland won't be afraid to hit Kittle for incompletions.

Hit Purdy early, get him a little rattled. Do not let SF get a lead, or at least keep it within a FG. Until we are sure we can get TD's.

I think our defense is for real, but can have bad games still, so very good, but yet to be elite. Need keep up what they have been for another 10 or 12 weeks. with performances against both NY team and NE.

Maybe need to play all Northeast teams, and not teams from the West. :muttley:

First, I think the AZ game was an anomaly. The team treated it like a funeral for Diggs, and I think the 3 starting OL being out really threw things off far more than just their run blocking/pass protection.

The two most urgent/alarming things I've noticed with the defense is that the pass rush keeps getting washed past the QB, or even voluntarily rushes past the QB, and all the QB has to do is step up in the pocket. They get good pressure but I'm not even sure they had a sack yesterday. Maybe one? I think that's why Dobbs was able to run so well last week, and why mobile QBs will give us fits. Rushing Micah up the middle helps with this but he can't do that every snap. The other thing is that once a RB makes it past our initial line they seem to gain alot of yardage. That looked better yesterday but playing CMC terrifies me in that regard. I was at least happy that LVE dropped back into the middle yesterday for the most part when it looked like he was going to rush. No more of him rushing, please.

I do think the redzone woes are an issue but Schoonmaker dropped a perfect pass for a TD on the first drive and it felt like they went conservative again in the second half once the lead was so big. Maybe I'm being too hopeful but the offense looked much sharper yesterday against a good defense.

Is this defense good enough to cover for an anemic offense that's really the question. I'd say so far there's a 75% chance they are good enough.

For 3 of the 4 games they have been dominant.
The other was an absolute no show.
So for 75% of the games played thus far they have been for real.

The Dallas defense gets a pass for the Cards game. DQ had scant time to adequately prepare for life-after-Trevon. Not to mention that Diggs' sudden departure appeared to unnerve the squad psychically to a significant degree. To their credit, they bounced-back in a huge way yesterday. I love this unit; they're going to be more than fine.

For any non-homer, it should be hard to really gauge how good this defense is. In 3 of our 4 games, we gave up a grand total of 13 points and forced 10 turnovers.

But then there was the stink of last week against Josh Dobbs and a bunch of Jags.

So what do you guys make of this defense?

Pause btw
We will find out over the next month. As of now, they have feasted on bad offenses and QBs. But now they have three great offenses coming up in the niners, chargers, and eagles.

Parsons game is off a touch.

When he's on there's no unit better- especially if Diggs is on the field.
The Patriots max-protected nearly all game, and doubled him most of the game. Also, the QB most of the time was throwing the ball super quick, and Micah still came close A LOT. The pressure, btw, was the reason for those turnovers.

This same defense kept CMC in check last year. Styles makes fights. The 49ers have not dominated the Cowboys. The Cowboys seem to find ways to self-implode. You can pick a number of reasons, there's just not one.
