Is this D for real or not?

The Cardinals have the 12th ranked offense in the NFL, and just put up over 20 on the road in SF. For whatever that fact is worth.

For any non-homer, it should be hard to really gauge how good this defense is. In 3 of our 4 games, we gave up a grand total of 13 points and forced 10 turnovers.

But then there was the stink of last week against Josh Dobbs and a bunch of Jags.

So what do you guys make of this defense?

Pause btw
Anybody that knows football can see that this team is very good.

insufficient data,,, they've beat up on crappy offenses and also got b-slapped by a mediocre offense last week.

the D is for real because of the coach. He showed what he can do in Seattle and is building another here. I have no concerns (except injuries) with the D. Its the Offense that can hold this team back

I am uncertain at this point i said it in another thread. alot depends on the OL your playing and hour our front 7 reacts. I dont think we have played against stellar lines or RBs or QBs. Dallas always struggles with mobile QBs so the fact that Dobbs ate them up early isnt surprising,

There also was blown assignments galore last week. I think how they play this week may tell us more but its also only going to be week 5 and it isnt a finished product yet

Im a bit concerned about 182 in half one but hopefully its an outlier. The second half was not as productive for them. The blown hooker assignment and Mccarthy going for it on 4th turned out to be huge

Us homers aka REAL fans, (lol ;)) can be critical of our team too, brother Willie B. I honestly think the Diggs injury put them (the whole team) in a funk. Even Jerry couldn't spin it into a positive. Even the greatest defenses of all time had games like that one against the Cardinals. I still believe in them. We will hold the 49ers to under 20 points. I predict a lot of FG's in this game and the cry babies here will cry that we had to kick 4 FG's to beat the 800 pound gorilla.

It's a very good defense. Top 10 in the league. Can't say it's elite at this point because of what happened against the Cardinals. But that shouldn't take away what they've accomplished in the other games, even if it came against a bunch of JAGs. The Eagles gave up 20 to the same team we held to 3 yesterday. Kansas City gave up 20 yesterday to a team we held to 10. Every game is different but you can only measure yourself against existing data.

Are we a better defense than San Fran because we shut out the Giants while the 49ers gave up 12? I don't think so ... for one thing, our shutout came in a downpour, which makes it tougher on the offense. But we may at least be of similar quality. We'll see.

Will definitely know one way or the other this weekend. No need to wonder anymore after that.

We are going to learn a lot about this team on both sides of the ball Sunday night. We will now how for real this defense is, with probably the best offense in the NFL top to bottom facing off against us. Giants, Jets, Pats aren't exactly high octane offenses we shut down but the way we did it, was impressive. The Cardinals game left a very bad taste in my mouth and I wrote them off as frontrunners. But they answered back in a big way against NE so I give them credit.

What I want to see against SF is clutch plays being made. While they gave up a low amount of points in the playoffs, SF still scored on most of their drives, and I think 5 of 6 drives straight. Never got that key play to change the game. Had a chance with Diggs having a breadbasket, easy pick but he dropped it. SF's offense just took over on the ground and wore us down as the game moved on. Same way it happened the year prior when Jimmy G was QB. They dominated us up front on both sides.

I want to see Parsons do his thing.

We are about to be seriously tested next 4 games so will find out if we are for real or just decent a solid-to-good squad.

This season could define us..........either way!

Defense is legit but built to play with a lead. They have the playmakers to flip a game in their favor real quick, but will struggle with teams that can stick to the run. Their best run defense is making the other team have to throw it. This game coming up is going to be a game the offense has to come alive. The defense can keep the scoring lower than the 49ers are used to, but it's not going to be 10.

We've got Purdy, Hurts, Tua, Herbert, and Allen on the schedule. A scrappy Lions team that does a lot of great things on offense awaits as well. We will certainly find out.

We also still have to exercise our demons with Sam Howell too.

Who knows, but I do feel this Duron "Diggs" dude is special. Our secondary is gonna be off the chain next season.

I mean, they are on track to lead the league in turnovers for a 3rd straight year.

That would be a historic achievement. They might not be completely stifling like the 2000s Ravens, but they take away the ball at an all time great rate.

They also lead the league in scoring defense and are second in sacks. They are what a top shelf defense looks like in the modern NFL.
