Is This Loss Beneficial?

I passed onto my son as he got into wrestling the oft-quoted maxim, “I never lose. I either win or learn.”

There are always positives to take from a loss. What is most important is the mindset of how you frame it and I think that maxim states the best outlook perfectly.

That said, I don’t think we have improved that much. Eventually you still need the dawgs to make a defense have teeth. Schemes can account for weaknesses to a point, but that only goes so far. What defenses need is talent at all three levels and the thing that really helps defenses and gives them a wide range of flexibility is having a gravitational player that scares coordinators. We don’t have talent at all three levels and we damn sure don’t have any gravitational players. At least none that stand out to me. Maybe Quinnen right now….

No was claiming they would be great. All off season the hope was they would be improved and at least middle of the pack.

I don't see how can anyone can say nothing good could've come from the game. Winning teams aren't made with an easy-bake oven. Failure is integral part of success.

There's nothing beneficial in this particular loss. Nothing. There was one team in our division that we knew we could curb stomp for the last 10-12 years and that was the Giants. Last night, a younger, hungrier, better coached version of the Giants completely mauled us on national TV. One game into the season and I already know we're in trouble.

It was highly unlikely that last year's historically bad defense was going to get replaced by a top 10 defense, especially in their first game with several new defensive players and a first time defensive coordinator.

I think Parker and the defense will improve some, but either way I think it will take a few games to get a read on how good or bad they are.

As for Aubrey's miss, the hold was not good ..

True but we're currently ranked 26th in total defense where as they were ranked 30th last season. That's an improvement of 4 spots.

Logic suggests that at this rate the Cowboys will have a top 10 defense by week 5 or 6.

With all of the preseason hype? Yes we needed an asskicking like this. Two things need to happen. First the team needs to lick their wounds and get to work. Second, (most) Cowboys fans need to acknowledge they bought into the hype and sound like a bunch of whiny Skip Baylesses this morning. Just as there is no free lunch for the Cowboys organization, fans need to put away the America's Team propaganda, put away the 5 SB trophies, the 90s and stop going from one extreme to another. We are not special. There are 32 teams with fanbases that want the same thing. Going to have to earn it one game at a time. Stop making excuses.

To suggest that the blowout was a reality check for a team that won 7 games in each of the last 2 seasons is quite daming. It is the job of the HC to rain in his players if they all believed a trip to the Super Bowl is next on the agenda. It is also a situation where the HC said he would play a bigger orle on the D, so if this is the case how on earth do we still look like we have no idea what the hell we are doing on the field? You could watch this game and swear it's from '25, and the Giants ran the same plaly time after time, with the same results.

I've read numerous posts on here on how great the defense will be and how Parker is a Fangio disciple. After the physical slap down by the Giants, Parker and the defense were given a dose of reality. This loss should open some eyes and help prepare them for Washington. Parker seemed tentative and was hesitant to make adjustments. Also, while Javonte's taunting penalty came at a bad time, it did have some value. We saw Aubrey miss what has become a very make able 48 yard point after. There is a slight positive to his penalty.
We cannot count on Aubrey in a clutch situation. Javonte exposed him.

Beneficial isn't the word I'd use. Best I can do is try and make some lemonade from the big ripe lemon we were served last night.

This era of the Cowboys has always had a problem with dealing with the kind of hype they've been getting this offseason. Expectations have been way to high and based on nothing more than 'on paper' based opinions. This was always going to be a year of continued rebuild. They just aren't ready for an "all in" run at a championship yet. Trying to force feed that because of Dak's (and Jerry's) age is foolish and short sighted. The head coach and QB making all those motivational, "Super or Bust" type of comments sends exactly the wrong message to a team who needs to find itself first and puts a target on their backs that feeds teams like the Giants who are trying to come out of their extended funk and who already have a bone to pick with the Cowboys.

The lemonade here is that a good kick in the nuts might help swing the focus back to where it needs to be. It is going to be very interesting to see how the team responds. How the leadership handles things when the adversity starts to stack up.

The overall attitude of the team did not impress me last night. That's almost as disappointing as the opening night loss to a division rival on primetime TV.
