Is this right about the 1, 2, and the 5?

Correct me if I'm wrong. The Miami game probably only matters for the Cowboys if the 49ers go 1 and 2. It isn't likely that the 49ers go 1 and 2, but possible. The Cowboys could get the 1 if the unlikely happened, if that happened and they went 3 and 0 and the Eagles went 2 and 1.

However, if Dallas loses to Miami and finishes 2 and 1 and the Eagles go 2 and 1, Dallas gets the 2 and gets the home game in the playoffs vs. the 7.

It also might not be bad if Dallas got the 5 and played at the 4. The Eagles very well could lose to the 7 and Dallas should beat the 4 and could beat the Eagles or whoever they get.

Sounds right to me.

I said a couple weeks ago that Seattle, and to a lesser degree the Rams, at home in the 2/7 game would be tougher than traveling to whoever wins the South in the 4/5 game.

The big difference is no realistic shot for a home game the following week as the 5. As the 2 you’re either home in round two or gone already.

Winning two home games and a miracle in SF is not impossible…and in that case, Phil isn’t going to completely lay down for SF and maybe we get three home playoff games.

Getting the 2 seed over the 5 is a big deal, but the Giants are gonna have to help.

Sorta,

Since Philly is also unlikely to lose more than 1, the Cowboys have to at least go 2-1 and the 1 loss can't be @WSH (for simplicity's sake).

So we have to beat either DET or MIA with a preference of beating DET to have a shot at the 2 seed.

So, we need to root for the 2 and they still can get that even if they lose to Miami.

Dallas can lose to Miami but if Philly beats Arizona, then Philly owns the common opponents tiebreaker.

I think the easiest way to look at it is-

If we take care of business and win out, there’s a reasonable chance we get the #2 seed. Just need Philly to lose one more game which is seeming more likely now than a couple weeks ago.

Tiny chance at the #1 seed, would need a SF implosion of epic proportions.

Worst case is #5 seed. Really don’t want this as we are clearly a different animal at home than on the road.

Correct. But if Philly loses 1 game and it’s not to ‘zona, Dallas will have the Division tiebreaker (assuming Dallas beats Detroit & Warshington).

Yeah a loss doesn’t eliminate that shot, but it probably means needing Philly to lose the next two…Giants and Arizona at home. I doubt they blow that last one at Giants with it all on the line, especially if they win the next two and get things turned around.

We kinda need to win out.

It just sucks that Philly seemed to get every damn break vs teams like Buffalo, KC and Miami. Needed them to drop one of those but it didn’t happen.

I have not checked this thoroughly but I believe for the Cowboys to win the NFC East they need ..

1) a better record than the Eagles at the end of the season (1st tiebreaker)

.. or ..

2) to be tied with the Eagles AND beat Washington AND the Eagles lose at least once to the Giants (2nd tiebreaker)

.. or ..

3) to be tied with the Eagles AND lose to Washington AND the Eagles lose both games to the Giants (2nd tiebreaker)

.. or ..

4) to be tied with the Eagles AND lose to Washington AND the Eagles lose two of their last three games as all 3 of their opponents are "common opponents". (3rd tiebreaker)

The Dolphins game does not matter beyond the wins/losses.

Beyond wins/losses, the Lions game matters ..

1) if the Cowboys and Eagles are tied and the first 3 tiebreakers do not decide the winner as the 4th tiebreaker is NFC conference record. The Cowboys and Eagles are tied in the loss column at the moment.

2) because it would help the Cowboys Strength of Victory (SoV) rating should the 5th tiebreaker be required.

If I am wrong on any of this, feel free to point it out :D

Yea, common opponents is almost irrelevant now with division games coming up. But, if both Dallas and Philly win out, they get the division….most likely. The Miami game is important to get it to strength of victory.

What happens if Dallas looses vs Miami and wins the other games plus Eagles loose to Arizona and wins the other games? Is Dallas gonna win the division or Philly?

Losing to the Dolphins matters greatly if it comes down to SoV tiebreaker.

As of right now, and excluding the same teams both Dallas and Philly have lost to or beaten, the Eagles’ victories give them 41 wins in the SoV. Dallas has 19.

Dallas can close the gap to 31-29 by beating Miami and Detroit. But Dallas is going to have a hard time overcoming that 2 victory margin because Dallas only has the Jets, Seahawks, Panthers and Chargers to contribute victories. The Eagles have Buffalo, KC, Minny and Tampa to contribute victories. It’s safe to say the Eagles will get more victories from their 4 than Dallas from theirs.

I dont see use winning vs Miami or Detroit.

Detroit game could get ugly.

Good analysis of a failure projected view...

Take the field of battle for three straight games and see if the Eagles are able to stumble their way to the finish line or not.
