Is Tyrone Crawford More Effective At Left End Than Defensive Tackle?

Probably. It was his position in college.

Crawford has been a failure here though, and I really think he doesn't deserve the majority of the blame.

  • He didn't have much football experience and was drafted as an upside project.
  • On top of that he was drafted into Rob Ryan's scheme as a misfit.
  • They built him up physically to fulfill that misfit role as a 3-4 under DE.
  • Fired Rob and because Crawford's new, bulkier physique they asked him to play a position he hadn't played before after coming back from a torn Achilles.

Total mismanagement of a player that probably could have been pretty good by this point.

Luckily for him, he's already gotten paid.

I don't think Marinelli moved him because he (Marinelli) thinks that he is failed at the 3-tech spot. I think Marinelli wanted to put the best possible run defense out there and this is what he came up with.

I'm not saying that TCrawford has been a success or failure at the 3-tech, but I don't think that is the basis for the move in Marineiil's mind.

I had hoped from more from TC, but in reality he's only had 3 healthy games since he signed the contract. Game 1 in 2015 and the past 2 games. It's hard to know on that sample size. He couldn't even brush his teeth with his bad arm last season so I can really judge anything that he did in those games.
I think we had the two Crawfords out at DE last week because our DEs were sucking so bad and we had better talent inside in the likes of Collins and Thornton as backups. In essence T Crawford + Collins > T. Crawford + Mayowa.

Hopefully they can get a little something from Davis this week and that will help out the rotation.

I don't recall that at all.

I recall the team signing Crawford for very decent money to play 3-T. It was not like we had other options.

TCrawford definitely started at LDE in game 1 of 2014. At some point in the season he was move to DT. He even made comments about how he lost weight to play DE and then had to try to bulk up on the fly to play DT. Henry Melton was ineffective and/or injured that season. I think Selvie took over and rotated with JCrawford at LDE when TCrawford moved to DT.

If he can produce better outside then that's great this year as the DL is a mess. His contract was pure hopeful thinking as usual and really made no sense to ink him.

Wow. Just. Wow.

I can appreciate he is trying to stop the bleeding in regards to run defense.

But the whole entire reason he was inked was because he was supposed to be the next, at least, I would hope, Jason Hatcher.

He failed. It was a bad recommendation and judging by current events, a horrible extension.

I think you're looking at this from the wrong perspective. I don't believe it's because Crawford is "failing" as the 3T. Rather, its more about getting his best 4 out there against the run.

Let's say, for the sake of the discussion, that Crawford is the best 3T on the roster. Regardless of what the Cowboys "lose" by moving him out of the 3T and to LDE, Marinelli's thought must be that a front 4 of TCrawford, Collins, McClain, and JCrawford is stronger than any DL that has to stop the run with Mayowa playing RDE. the only other guy on the current roster who is suited to play RDE is JCrawford. Now someone has to play the RDE to fill that spot. If Collins can play the 3T without a huge drop off in effectiveness, that's the logical move.

Don't be surprised if this move is only for two games. When DLaw comes back, expect TC to move back inside, unless Collins turns out to be an absolute stud.

Yep. They like Crawford. They like his motor, and the pressure he gets. And they like Collins, apparently. This move was about getting their best four on the field for week three, and our fans, predictably, get it wrong so they can complain about it.

LDE is his best position. They should move Lawrence to RDE when he returns.

We can't sit at the table chasing bad bets in an attempt to win our money back. If Crawford can be more productive at end then we need to move him there, contract to position value be damned. Even if it means acknowledging the team made a premature (perhaps bad) investment two years ago.

I agree with this. But I think he's a 3 although I'd have no problem with his playing the 5 IF he helps the team. Right now he probably does.

I firmly believe it takes more than one player on the DL. In fact I'd say 3 solid guys at the least or you're just going to see the OL game the better players and one up the others.

I think when you add Lawrence to the mix and some of the others get more experience and step up you will see an improvement in the DL play. I don't think we have the ingredients to have more than 35 sacks. Crawford is a solid player but he's not special.

Or the homer crowd tries to spin a player playing poorly at his intended position and a bad contract as somehow a 'good thing'. Talk about "predictable"...

I'm thinking that might be the plan at this point. As expected, the pass rush is poor and they're juggling combinations to see what works. Too bad that it's happening during the actual season.

Like I said he's a solid player whether we've seen it this year or not. His salary isn't out of line.

Just because you say it, it doesn't make it so. He was paid to be the Warren Sapp of this defense and not only hasn't he been that, he's now been moved out of the position.
