His bad plays are generally from trying too hard to make big plays. That's when he gets burned.

If he gets a chance to make a big play, great. Otherwise I'm perfectly happy with him keeping opponents from making big plays.

And this is assuming we know the coverage scheme, his responsibilities and where the safeties are. On occasion he whiffs on a break, but to your point, the risk has been worth the reward.
