Disney buys much of Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox in deal that will reshape Hollywood

Walt Disney Co. has finalized a $52.4-billion deal to buy much of Rupert Murdoch’s entertainment empire, a blockbuster union that would radically transform Hollywood into a land of fewer giants.

The stock deal, which Disney announced Thursday morning, represents Disney’s boldest acquisition yet. If regulators approve it, the Burbank behemoth would take over the prolific 20th Century Fox movie and television studio, Fox’s 22 regional sports channels, cable entertainment brands FX and National Geographic, and Fox’s portfolio of international operations, including a fast-growing pay-TV service in India.

seems disney is buying into a lot of stuff these days and their cartoons are now featuring transgender heros and shows now have gay kids kissing. (i think just once but it made "one million moms" mad).

we'll see what they do with it and as for their choice of programming - stop protesting and just stop watching the channel. you've got tv lock and parental guides, use 'em. but if this is what they want to do and there is an audience for it, i don't get the problem. i won't watch it, but i'm pretty sure i'm not their target audience anyway.

I had so hoped that this deal would happen. I think it's a great day for movie fans, and superhero fans in particular.

And I think you will see a dramatic shift in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with Avengers 4. It's currently being filmed and I fully expect some reference to the newly-reacquired characters to occur in that film.

Between this and the new Star Wars film today? Nerdvanna!

don't keep up on things but I did not know they were dead.

Essentially, yeah. Between that awful Josh Trank bomb, and the fact that Marvel actually stopped even publishing a Fantastic Four comic.

I think that all changes today.

I wonder how this will effect the political views of Fox (i.e. Fox News).
I've read that the Murdoch kids are selling out big time.
I'd prefer to have networks with a variety of political views....whether I agree with them or not.
Otherwise you get the Kremlin or the 3rd Reich
Multiple world views are paramount.

Okay folks. Let us all take a moment and remember one of the 30 golden CowboysZone rules:

#7 - You will not post political discussions or comments.

Let us not lock my celebration thread over stuff known ain't kosher. :)

Now, as Wolverine would say, how about that Disney deal bub? :p

Yepper!

And the Fantastic Four will be brought back "from the dead" too.
I am not getting my hopes up but I would be lying if I do not already have all my fingers (and toes) crossed. The FF has always been one of my most favorite comics book titles. It will be criminal if the group never ends up having a great movie adaptation. Even though I know there exists an understandable appreciation for the first two movies, I think (hopefully) Disney can far exceed those two movies with a closer translation of their book in my opinion.

Hopefully they will somehow insert Franklin Richards at some point into a rebirth of the movie franchise. It would be too late to impact the current Infinity War storyline in the MCU but it would be personal thrill seeing Reed and Susan's baby boy put characters like Thanos in their proverbial places! :p

Based on their track record, I regard it as a certainty that Disney/Marvel can do a better job with the FF. As well as with the X-Men, who I feel have succeeded despite Fox and not because of them. It will be nice to finally get them "back".

Can't agree with you there. I've never been a fan of the "omnipotent" characters with ridiculous power levels that act as a writer's "magic eraser" or deus ex machina. And I'll never forgive Heroes Reborn!

Understood, and I can definitely emphasize rueage of Heroes Reborn also, but I have a deep appreciation for characters like Spectre, Living Tribunal, The Anti-Monitor, Galactus, Beyonder, The Phoenix Force, etc. Cosmic characters and storylines test writers' science fiction imaginations (or fantasy for some) and I have generally loved their efforts. Cannot say the same for every cosmic character thought, like DC's Parallex character for example. The whole Hal Jordan goes mad theme did not sit well with me.

I am very curious is that German company keeps the agreement with the Fantastic 4 with Disney.

Constantine has a limited distribution deal in place with Fox. And they're small potatoes in this really. I expect them to work with Disney to either make money together or to sell the rights outright. Reports indicated that they were looking to sell them off just this year, so I expect little impediment from getting the characters onscreen.

I like some of those characters too, I've just never been a fan when they're used as magic erasers when writers painted themselves into a corner.

DFW, you may already know this but, as an FYI, Fox News is not a part of this deal.
