It Finally Happened

So if he is retained as the permanent coach, do you think he hires an offensive coordinator and relieves himself of playcall?

If he's as smart as he's supposed to be.

Why not bring in Dan Reeves as OC? He would bring immediate legitimacy to Jason Garrett's staff, plus help him with the running game.

My biggest concern is the D. Pasqualoni might be a great guy, but he is not the answer at DC, even interim DC. There really is no viable candidate on the current staff.

Eight games isn't enough. Too bad Wade wasn't fired sooner.

Now that Garrett is in place, I can't see him losing the job after an eight-game audition, whether he wins or not.

This is Jones' handpicked heir to the coaching throne, and he'll give him lots of leeway. If Jones just likes Garrett's leadership abilities, the job is his for the next couple of years ... with some new staff brought in, of course, to sell us on changes being made for the positive.

Jones has had his eye on this move since he hired Garrett, so I just can't see him giving up on this dream until it becomes a full-blown nightmare.

Of course, I hope it doesn't, and Garrett proves Jones right. But you just never know when you go with a young, unproven guy if you'll get the next Sean Payton or the next Lane Kiffin.

Wow.

Now I have zero confidence in Garrett as a HC.

I got to watch Reeves when I was living in NY and then when I lived in Atlanta.

He was a coach that did really well with those 'one man gang' type of teams (Elway, Jamal Anderson, Vick), but when that one man gang wasn't there, he was terrible.

He also made mind numbing decisions and was a horrible drafter.

My favorite story was in '02 the Falcons played the Bears. The Falcons had just drafted TJ Duckett in the 1st round and were very high on him. Duckett had a very good first half. In the second half Warrick Dunn couldn't run the ball and they never used Duckett.

When asked why he didn't use Duckett, Reeves point blank said 'I forgot he was on the team.'

If that wasn't bad enough, the local news showed Duckett standing right next to Reeves for most of the 2nd half.

I agree with most of your posts, Hos, but I dunno about JG. He's a guy you want to root for since he was a former player. But at the same time, our offense has been anemic the entire season in the most important stat: points scored.
I don't know what it's like within the organization, but I almost always pictured the defense was in one locker room, while the offense was in another. Each side playing for their coach.
It just seems, and it's just conjecture on my part that this organization as a team is just kinda broken. I never saw Wade talking to Tony on timeouts. It was just weird. Whatever happens record-wise the rest of the season is secondary to me. I wanna see a team take the field every week. If JG can do that, I'll be his biggest supporter.

I'm really hoping that Hos is dead on right about Garrett.

I hope its better than his other predictions

I'm confident in saying that you won't see 50 confused shots per week on the face of the Cowboys coach from here on out.

I suppose that's an immediate plus.

I knew one day Tom Landry would be gone. I will not deny that I was excited to get Jimmy Johnson from Miami, but for years I wanted Dan reeves to be the guy who replaced Landry. My reason was simple. He was a Dallas Cowboys player, Assistant Coach, and him being the HC here just seemed perfect.

As we all know that didn't happen. I nearly got a partial wish in 2008 when he was coming to be a consultant here, but again as we all know that fell apart.

In 1993 I became a fan of a 3rd string QB named Jason Garrett. It was entirely because of his intelligence for the game. Something I deeply respect.

It isn't Dan Reeves, but it feels like I imagined that would.

I think this is a great move. It makes sense both logistically and financially. Besides, this promotion provides Garrett with the opportunity to display his inability to lead this team or any other toward anything other than the chance to pick 1st in next year's draft. Hopefully Jerry will spend the necessary time in the off season in picking a GM and our next head coach.

Was it fun today to watch gears strip after the PC? I swear the whole forum slammed into reverse.

There were a few who said they liked his composure and his presence in talking with the media..

That hardly makes for a good coach though. Campo was a great talker as well lol.

Some are encouraged by the PC, but until he proves that he can be successful, then he's done nothing to earn his HC job right now imo. Our offense is terrible and our production has gone down the past few years under him.

I am glad the Wade era is gone, we were never going to win a SB under him IMO.

Now, though I like Garrett's pedigree and general approach, we need to see him as not only a leader of men but also a motivator of the lethargic.

Jason will get his 8 games and I do wish him success and if he has the "it" factor it will show up in some measurable way!

If not, simply bring in the best leader for this team that can expunge the putrid "culture" that has ailed this team the last 3 or 4 years!

I just watched Garrett's press confrence and have to say it was very impressive. I like him a lot more after hearing him speak about what he wants and how he will get it. The only problem I have is well will the players respond? I sure hope they do because if not this may be a very short lived dream for you and not so much Garrett's fault as the players.

I will put this here...for the record I wanted Garrett as HC when he was first hired as the posts from that time will prove...I still back Garrett and think he has what it takes...but I think it isn't going to be an overnight thing it is going to take a while to change the atmosphere out at the ranch but out of all the coaching canidates out there this guy was and is my first choice for 3 reasons

1) he is smart enough to know and be able to manipulate Jerry to clean this mess up where no other coach out there knows Jerry as well.

2) he really is a brilliant minded football coach

3) he won't take losing and the crap from the idiot players.

I am pretty sure of all those things

were I think he might come up short on is delegating to the other coaches and suffer fatigue and burn out

I am excited about the choice but I don't expect overnight success but I do expect some steady improvement....not sure how much can be done on offense with this piss poor o-line but the defense has almost all of its players and I expect that side of the ball to pick it up.

What exactly have you seen from him that makes you think he's a "brilliant minded football coach." ??

Just wondering..

I don't think it's all about Jerry Jones. IMO the key person in all of this is Stephen Jones. I believe he has more of the GM role than Jerry or some of the Cbz posters are prepared to admit.

You know I'm not a fan of Garrett and have my doubts about him. So Im going to quit right there talking about him.

But I do hope your right.

that maybe be true my friend but than that is still a plus for Garrett

Well Garrett finally gets his shot, lets see what he can do.

If we get embarrassed next week again, Garrett better not get to comfortable in the HC office.

I think this is something that doesnt get talked about enough. Wade usually came on the field and at the first sign of trouble, almost immediately took on that confused, defeated expression. Any team, regardless of how veteran or how young is gonna see that. I think this team clearly took on the identity of the coach.

Confidence breeds confidence. Garrett may or may not be as good a football person as Wade was (who by all acconts, was an exceptional defensive coach, at least until this yr) but what he lacks in that area he may make up for in attitude. Jimmy exuded confidence. I think to some extent Parcells did. (He definitely did when he was with the Giants) Gailey didnt. Campo didnt. Wade definitely didnt. Garrett seems to have that piece though.

We'll see how this plays out the next 8 weeks.

Hos...there's nothing wrong about selecting someone in your favorite organization that you like. I even chose a wildcard each training camp and root the hell for him. I hope your heart is filled with Jason Garrett at the helm. Realisticly, he has a ways to go under the yoke of helmsman for the ship.

He's not afraid to take directions, and that is a positive as he doesn't react always with a counterpunch. He will attempt to take the game to the opponent, and that will slowly kindle a competitive spirit in his players as time winds onward.

As to wins/losses for this season...the plateau of expectations here are very low now. That will protect his position in the organization. He will be held responsible for a general direction and character on this team.

But here, it is what they say: Sixty minutes between the high rise and the outhouse. It just takes a spark to ignite a team...and here, it's his job to keep them together and motivated.

I think that I would take sparks, such as Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, even Bryan McCann in the return game, and creat. I would put Sean Lee into the heat of the fire...early against the Giants. And start his move into the future.

But forge an identity that is based upon character. No longer is cash flow, twitter, and press clippings a point of pride. Jason, make going to war on the field your priority, and you'll build a foundation to be around MANY more years. The ball is definitely in your court and if you build character, other scales are very low...
