It has to be Wade Phillips

I'm a huge Norv Turner fan, and I truly believe he'd balance our offense and get the most out of our running game while helping Romo develop into a star.

However, we didn't bomb down the stretch because of our offense. We still have one of the guys who was doing the playcalling, and we have Jason Garrett. Our problem was the freakin' defense. It's not going to get fixed promoting guys already on the sideline.

Given that the defense is the main issue that must be addressed with better coaching (and the offense simply needs better players on the OL and at FB) and the fact that the Cowboys have the most money and high draft picks invested on that side of the ball, I see no way we bring in a head coach for the offense.

If Wade Phillips impresses today, he'll be the HC for the next 2-4 years due to his age, and then it goes to JG. If we don't hire a defensive coach, I don't think we'll hire anyone else...it will be turned over to Jason.

I really like Norv, but it just makes no sense. If Garrett is that close to being a HC candidate, you sure better not be worrying that he can't even handle the offensive side of things. I think Norv will get a courtesy interview, as will a minority candidate, but in the end, it's Wade, some other defensive guru of the 3-4, or Jason Garrett.

Personally, I want to see what Wade Phillips will do with our defense and DeMarcus Ware, and you can bet he'll bring the best young assistant he has on that side of the ball to be his DC under his tutillage, a guy who can take over the defense full time in the future.

It makes too much sense not to be Wade or Ryan. Maybe even Rvera, if you're looking to stretch a bit. Norv makes no sense at all. It seems like we're killing time waiting for the super bowl to be over, though.

I agree 99%.

We've already interviewed a minority candidate. :p:

IF Jason Garrett is the future, and even being considered seriously now, then it makes no sense to look at some of the defensive guys named either, especially guys who run the 4-3. I see no way a defensive coach of the Bears gets the job...why hire a 4-3 guy and change everything again when you can hire the guy running one of the best attacking 3-4's in SD, hoping he'll do the same thing for your defense and that he won't be coaching but so much longer anyway?

I agree 100%, Wayne. The only way I think it isn't Phillips is if SD promises Phillips that he'll succeed Schottenheimer a year from now.

I wonder who the minority candidate will be. Rivera 10 days from now? Or has Jones made a token phone call to someone like Denny Green?

it's either Phillips or Rivera, would like it to be Rex Ryan, but I see no indication that we're even interested

I'd love to get Ryan, but after Garrett was hired, it would be difficult for a guy like Ryan to come here. My perception of Ryan is that he'll eventually be a hot commodity, while a retread like Phillips or a more desperate coach like Gibbs would be willing to accept almost anything to get a HC job.

Rex Ryan's man-boobs make Bill Parcells look like Twiggy.

Not that it really matters... I'm just sayin'.

I forgot about that. I'm sure that Jerry has made sure it technically counts as a HC interview.

I don't see how Ryan or Rivera makes sense. They'd be great coaches but they don't make sense. It is pretty clear that Garrett comes in as heir apparent to the HC job. A young coach doesn't want to look over his shoulder -- older guys like Norv or Phillips. They know they aren't viewed as long term HC candidates anywhere -- so you take your 3 or 4 year contract and collect on it.

I agree that it should be Phillips. I just don't see a Ron Rivera coming here under the circumstances. I would like for him to.. but I just don't see it as a HC.

Norv would bring NOTHING to the table. If Jason is as good as everyone seems to think, having Norv would be worthless.

Phillips makes the most sense for our situation right now. I will be interested in who the DC would be though.

I agree the logical choice for HC right now is Phillips.

However, there is no way on this green earth that we will be able to hold onto Jason as OC for 2-4 years, so throw that part of your plan out the window.

We'll be lucky if someone doesn't snatch him from us after one season.

That's why I say Jerry should bite the bullet and give it to Garrett now.

if Phillips comes in,I'm sure He'll have his hand in the D quite a bit.No matter who the DC is.

I actually have my doubts that it's even Rivera, this team isn't going through a rebuilding stage, so Jerry probably wants someone w/ HC experience, and have his assistants be young

I don't think so.. but I see your logic But this is a different situation. Garrett's dream Job is the HC of the Cowboys.. and he needs to wait for 2 years, which I think is the plan,, then he will. I don't see Garrett going anywhere even for a HC opportunity.
