It used to be so much easier to be a Cowboys fan when Tom Landry was the head coach and Roger Staubach was our QB.

Those were the days.

For 29 seasons Tom Landry was the only coach we ever had. He was considered one of the all-time great NFL coaches.

He was an honorable man, husband and father.

Roger was a Heisman winner, from the Naval Academy. What is better than that?

He also was an honorable man, husband and father.

There was nothing but pride in being a Cowboys fan.

Now it seems we have to defend or explain why we are Cowboy fans where ever we go.

I think it changed in part after we won 3 out of 4 Super Bowls in the mid 90's, (jealousy) and also as we became public enemy No. 1 with all of the arrests, bad press, .. culminating with the Irvin/Williams "rape at gunpoint" fiasco.

Now we are the target of anything negative in many media outlets, having recently to explain/defend "Romo&turnovers", "Romo&Jessica", T.O., PacMan, Tank, Wade, JG, Jerry, etc.

It sure used to be easier, .. I miss the good ol' days.

Some of you other long time fans may know what I'm talking about.

Its feeling like you do right now though that makes you appreciate a championship even more.

Just hang in there man. This season is still young and you're never as good or as bad as people say you are.

The Atlanta game could be the game that turns everything back around. IMO its a crossroads game for us and will take our season into one direction or the other.

The simple act of having to always explain why I'm a Cowboys fan hasn't changed since I was a child of the mid-70's. Personally, I've normally attributed brain damage as the reasoning behind the person asking me the question. Usually, I will ask the person posing question, "I'll try to answer your question, but let me first ask why you're a fan of such-and-such team"? When the response has to do with some lame nonsense associated with geography, etc., I'll think, "BINGO!" to myself and try to explain that which the person wasn't going to understand anyway.

I do understand where you're coming from... but I don't feel the same way.

There are a lot of people on this team who are very, VERY good on and off of the field. I'm honestly proud of them as a fan.

A few of the guys who make up the team aren't worthy of praise. There are some who I'm not crazy about... but then there were some guys on the 70's and 80's versions of the Cowboys that I didn't like very much either.

For me, it is 100% easy and natural to be a Cowboy fan. I can't imagine it any other way.

Bingo!

Landry as HC wasn't without controversy. And I can guarantee you that if this site existed throughout Tom's career he would have set the all-time record for "calls to be fired".

Dallas has always been a lightning rod for dislike and envy.

You know all that though. Going back to the quote above I think most of the difficulty now stems from the instant gratification society and overhyped media we now live in.

For his own sake I truly hope that Tony Romo (or other Cowboys in the spotlight) does not watch or read much of the ridiculous garbage put out about him these days.

Explain.

I don't mean disagreeing with a play call or something.

You had the Duane Thomas issue, You had the Hollywood Henderson, you Had Roger wanting to call his own plays and Tom not having none of it. You had Morton and Roger QB situation. Tom and the Cowboys had some controversy over the years but no ESPN to spend an hour question it and breaking it all down.

I can related and also miss those times. Tony Hill, Randy White, Too Tall, Jeffcoat, Dorsett, Walls, Roger the Dodger, & of course the man with the stern look on his face and strength in his heart.. Mr. Landry. He didn't have to say a word to his team. They knew what was up.. A master of preparation... Gawd. I miss those days..........

Duane Thomas was a doofus and he admitted it years later. Yeah Landry was slow to realize what he had in Roger. Hollywood has admitted that Landry tried to help him but he was too arrogant to listen.

First let me say I enjoyed your post and agree with its premise, but I think the critics have always been around. Take my user name for instance have you ever heard another team called "Next Years Champions"? Although there are several which the name could apply.

I also think Tex Schram was a somewhat polarizing individual and some people resented him and the team he helped establish. It does seem today's fans are extremely impatient and fail to understand or at least remember that even during the best of times it is hard to win consistently in the NFL.

Yes i remember the good ole days as well. Unfortunately this is part of the reason that the boys are over-hyped now. People either love or hate the cowboys. Just like teams in other sports, like the Lakers and Yankees. Jerry has tried for years to recapture the magic, but as we all know this has not happened.
