I'm sure by now everybody is tired of reading all of the various opinions of the importance of the game last night and the performance of the Cowboy players. What continues to surface is how easily the performance of the Cowboys is dismissed by players and fans alike because it is "just a preseason" game.
It was not JUST a preseason game.
First, I have heard the commentators of various other games say that the 3rd preseason game is the dress rehearsal for the season. The 3rd preseason game is where the coaches can truly evaluate the performance of the team in regard to how much the players have learned and how successful they are in incorporating the scheme into their ability to implement the scheme and their respecitive assignments and to work together as a team. The 3rd preseason game is when finally the first team is given more than a token appearance and will play the majority of the snaps. For the first two or three quarters the evaluation will not be upon individual players so much but upon the team. This adds to the importance of the 3rd preseason game.
There is the emotion attached to this game. I realize that the Governor's cup doesn't mean anything to anybody but the fans but the fact that it is for a phantom Texas championship adds pressure to the game. While the outcome of the game might not be that important to some; the way that the players respond to pressure is important. Last night was reminiscent of the manner in which the Cowboys responded to the more highly hyped games. It appeared that every time the Cowboys faced a must win to grasp the lead in the division or to secure a higher ranking in the playoffs they would fold. When they did the most talking and the opposition talked the most smack the Boys did the least. We have players who appear to be very good at talking the talk but then it goes down hill from there.
The final score and the outcome of the game are not the important factors here. It is how the players responded to the pressure. This was the first time the first team played for an extended time and various sectors of the the team offensively and defensively fell apart. I would say more but this area has been addressed thoroughly by different posters.
Also, in the 3rd quarter especially there were the second and third teamers who were truly fighting for a job but they were sleep walking. If your livelihood is on the line wouldn't you give maximum effor to prove that you belonged. Where is the competitive spirit I hear so much about? Where is the sense of pride in one's work?
No, this was not JUST another preseason game. The Boys are dismissing the results and their efforts by now being quoted that it was not important as it was just a preseason game. This bothers me. A competitor competes when he is in the game.
Is the sky falling? No. Does the game last night portent for a bad season? No.
But Romo said himself when they were winning that if you win in preseason then you feel that you can win in the regular season. If you can't implement a scheme and plays that will succeed in preseason then how will they be successful in the regular season? I'm paraphrasing Romo himself. Somebody needs to remind him and the rest of the players of that quote.
Everything could hit on all cylinders this Thursday but since they will only practice one day between last night and Thursday does anybody believe that all of the misfiring parts of this juggernaut can be corrected in one day? I am placing a lot of hope on the time between Thursday and the 9th that the Cowboys will indeed prove that last night really was JUST another preseason game.
