the 3rd preseason game is the dress rehearsal for the season.

Is the sky falling? No. Does the game last night portent for a bad season? No.

I am placing a lot of hope on the time between Thursday and the 9th that the Cowboys will indeed prove that last night really was JUST another preseason game.

I agree with you.

While it is just preseason, traditionally the second to last preseason game is the dress rehearsal for the season - at least the first half when the starters are playing. Thankfully the results don't count now, but I think it is a legitimate cause for concern over how poorly we played in so many areas.

No one is screaming that the sky is falling, so for everyone that's running around yelling "chicken little", you might want to take a deep breath also.

Maybe Owen Wilson was a manic depressant Cowboy fan cuz he was taken into Santa Monica emergency room today with a slashed wrist and pill overdose.

Hope he didn't read this thread, probably what sent him over the edge.

Is this true?

Yeah against the Texans, but I almost forgot, the Cowboys can't seem to beat them in Houston in the regular season either.
Ummm, yeah, go ahead make a huge deal out or irrelevant game. Yup, sky is falling because we can't beat Texans in Huston during the pre-season.

Fear not! You'll have plenty of opportunities to join one atleast 8 weeks this season! IMO.
So are you predicting that we'll lose at least 8 games this season? You must have a horrible view of our team then. I hope you aren't basing your predictions on this game. There are times when we should be concerned but this game wasn't one of them.

The fact that it's a preseason game isn't the point, the point is come out and play with some passion and determination when you're a team that has something to prove, and kick around the lowly Texans!
Yes, it is a point because all these sky is falling threads immediately following a pre-season game. You and I don't know what the outcome would be had starters played entire game. The pre-season games aren't indicator of regular season results, many teams have gone 4-0 and did nothing and teams have gone 0-4 (losing to lowly teams) and went onto the playoffs.

If this was a regular season game, then yes, we would have a reason to be concerned but right now, we are still trying to evaluate players and work on schemes so relax and be prepare to enjoy the regular season games, buckle your seatbelt, we'll be on a rollercoaster ride...as usual.

Na, I've actually thought they'd be around .500, 7-9, 8-8, 9-7 since back in the offseason. But hey, I hope they proove me wrong and actually have a elite season. I'd come on here and take a kickin' for that!:)

Didn't you get the memo? This was the watershed moment in the history of the franchise. We'll probably see Chinese Democracy released before the Cowboys win another football game.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! I'm so glad I started this thread. I didn't have any idea that I had so many things wrong with me until I read all of the responses with their diagnosis of my many problems. I have now learned that I'm manic depressant, wallowing in doom and gloom, shouting to everybody that the sky is falling and that my real name is Chicken Little. Now that I have caught these horrible diseases in an early stage maybe they can be successfully treated.

While I read this site every day that I'm home, usually the first thing I do of a morning and the last thing I do at night, I seldom post because I know that I don't meet the criteria as a poster.

This site is hyped as a place where people can "discuss" and share opinions about the Cowboys but I learned that is really not the case. If you mention one thing that could be even remotely misconstrued as a concern that the Cowboys won't finish 16-0 in the regular season and sweep the playoffs resulting in a crushing defeat on our opponent in the SB then you are a doom and gloom person.

While I have my own issues with the beat writers, I don't think they are idiots because they write something negative about the Cowboys or that they might think the Eagles will have an above 500 season.

I hesitated to write this time because I was well aware of the criteria for posting. It isn't enough to be a fan for the entire life of the Cowboys franchise as I am, but you must gush and fawn over them even when they go three years with a 5-11 record. If the team, coach, owner or any player is not touted as a probowler or HOFer then you are too negative to post here. If you do follow the company line that isn't enough, you have to use impeccable English. Therefore, a poster should have a PHD in languages, show a link for anything he/she reads and must quote somebody for any opinion you have or it isn't valid.

Why do I read this site every day? Because there are some MODs that provide excellent information that I can't get anywhere else. Just to set the record straight, I am very hopeful that we make the playoffs, not only go deep into the playoffs but at least make the NFC championship game. I would be happy with improvement over last year. However, if they lose every game this season I will remain a fan and hope for next year.

But should that catastrophy happen, I promise I will not come on this site and say anything negative. I will look on the bright side and say this was a good season because we get the first pick in the draft and will win the SB next year. I just told a lie. I will grit my teeth and suffer in silence and after a while come back to this site so all of you can cheer me up by telling me how perfect everything is.

Sorry this thread didn't go the way you'd hoped. I mean that sincerely. And while I think your right that some responses are over the top I think you'd be remiss if you didn't take some responsibility for how this dialogue has gone.

Your venting in this post I've quoted is IMO over the top. The accusations you're making about only positive commentary being welcome here is not accurate. Its not as simple as positive or negative comments. Its all in how you say it, what rationale you give to support it, and how reasonably you respond to contrary thoughts.

If you want reasonable responses, you must sow reasonable seed yourself. Even then, some won't hold up there end of things, but most will.

Hope it goes better for you. :)

Dude overstatement ! Nobody is saying do not say Bad things or point out what you see if it's negative. I do not pretend to speak for anyone other than myself and for me it's that whenever the Cowboys lose people go to we suck mode. If what some of you say is true, Peyton and the Boys should just mail it in because we whooped their collective ***** , right?

This was a Pre Season Game, nothing more, nothing less. It does not mean we are the Champs when we win, it does not mean we suck should we lose. Now noticing plays and or players who stunk it up is cool. Asking what round draft pick we need to spend to get assante Samules is over the top.

The whole dress rehersal line is a straw dog but I'll play along. Dress rehersal is where you make mistakes, you welcome them. That way you can tweak what needs tweakin. Not saying we do not need to address some things, just saying, it was a pre season game, it has little or no bearing on the season.

Wow! Just, wow! Let's go over a few facts about Saturday's game.

1) Our starting WR tandem wasn't even on the field. You think the Texans are going to stack the line of scrimmage with Glenn out there to stretch them out. Owens was kept in check for the most part because he was the only real threat. Why do you imagine Sam Hurd look like a Pro Bowler out there? You think Glenn wouldn't have eaten their lunch by half-time?

2) Our starting corner was eating popcorn. You all can fall into the fear-based media machine that has you convinced Newman's season is is just a butterfly flap from being over, but I'll wait and see what happens first. Newman on the field and you can cut those passing numbers in half.

3) Ellis is still missing. This IS a concern because we've been told for weeks that he's "day to day". IF he comes back and can play then those runs to the right side will be far less effective. Spencer has ALOT to learn about his position. Anyone who thought he was going to be on fire from the word go was sadly mistaken. The kid was picked near the end of the 1st round for a reason. It doesn't mean he's a bust, but he's no Ware or Merriman. He has been nothing short of dominated at the point of attack both against the run and the pass. The fortunate thing is that it's not a lack of talent, but more a lack of knowing where, when and how to use his physical gifts. Those things can be coached, but we probably won't see the real fruits of that labor until late in the season or next year.

Yes, this was the ever important "dress rehearsal" game. Let the bells of doom ring loud and clear. "We suck, we suck". This is the most laughable overreaction to a pre-season loss that I have ever seen by both fans and media.

I finally got to watch the replay of the game on Sunday. I saw a team that got screwed on a special teams play (with a non-call on a hideously obvious block in the back). I saw a defense that, for some reason, was WAY overpersuing the ball (leading to being gashed by the run and screenplays). I saw a #1 receiver disguised as a rookie draft pick (Jones will be the best player that entire team will see for YEARS, and teamed with the veteran Johnson will be a scary combo for EVERY team that faces them this year). I saw a team that put the brakes (for whatever reason) on their blitz packages (I saw more blitzes against Denver inthe first two defensive series than I saw all game Saturday. Maybe due to Newman's absence). And, I saw an inconsistent Tony Romo just miss a TD to Crayton (Glenn would have kickedinto a gear that Crayton doesn't own and it would have been 6) while going toe to toe with with a very sharp Matt Schaub (and that was on one of Tony's "down days"). The offense starting O (without Terry Glenn) kept pace with an offense that was at full strength going against a defense that was missing two starters (Newman and Ellis) and all of a sudden the world is coming to an end? How many actually beleive that with Glenn and Newman alone (even without Ellis) in there that the game would have been the same? Anyone? Man, my drama queen 12 year old is more rational than some of you. And trust me you have no idea how pathetic that actually is.

Wow! Just wow!

In a way that kinda sums it up for many on this board. But there are still many reasonable folks on here too, even if you're not in agreement with them some of the time or more.

Hey man, if you've got an opinion share it, don't let folks that disagree with you or bash for what you say detour you from typing what's on your mind on here about the Cowboys and the situations the team is in! That's what it's for. If they bash you, so what, who cares. It's just football and not real life stuff, so preach it brotha! That's what I say.:)

I feel you with that, but as a daily reader, you must admit that this appeared to be an "all is lost, we are nowhere near ready to compete" thread. I agree that as soon as someone mentions possible failure based on performance, you will get negative feedback, pre-season and regular season. I guarantee something will not go right this season and someone will post a thread that all is lost and we might as well look forward to drafting with the #1 overall pick next draft. It is all in the way you say it and I hope you are not discouraged from posting because I think you had some good insight on what was going on. However, we all know the Cowboys stunk it up against Houston, but you must realize that it still was a pre-season game, and though we strive to win ALL games, the #1 priority was still player evaluation. Even though we had starters in for the most part, the object was still to try new plays and see how players respond/execute. Please note that the team did not call plays for the sole purpose of winning the game. This is the time when you WANT your team to make mistakes, because the win/loss does not count. Now that we know what is wrong, we can make the adjustments before the games count. Now that we have that established, here is what we can draw from the game:

  • Even though the O-line played poorly, remember that our starting OT's only have seen limited action this offseason and preseason, so they are still trying to gel. This does take time for an effective unit to learn each others strength, weeknesses, ande tendecies to adjust your own play style to fit the unit.
  • We can equate the poor running game to the play of the O-line. However, I did see some good runs from our RBs which leads me to believe we will have a dynamic rushing attach once the O-line plays to their potential.
  • Sam Hurd is a baller and should make positive contributions to the team if and when he sees playing time this season.
  • Romo will make some bad plays here and there but overall will do what is needed to make big plays and win games.
  • James and Burnett are faster now and should make some big plays.
  • We need to work with our OLBs (mainly Spencer) with outside run containment.
  • Our LBs were in position to make tackles but didn't finish on the tackles. We need to gt stronger in that area.
  • Roy Williams is also basically learing a new position now that he is closer to the LOS. He missed some plays that he could have made but I am confident he will make those plays later in the season.
  • Our backup CBs are definitely a concern, but take into consideration that the big plays came against guys that would not normally start, namely Glenn, Reeves, Ball, and Elam. Henry wasn't tested much, and Newman should be back in week 1.

Gotta agree with Rockytop here. We sleptwalk through this one. It's like we bought into our own hype and got bit in the collective arse. When i saw the 3 penalties in the offensive line i knew we were going to lose this one. Our head wasn't in it. One thing that this game reminded me was that this was exactly how this team played on the road in december of last year and the year before that. we're still not good enough to turn it on on demand like we were in the early 90's. we need all cylinders to hit otherwise it's a struggle.

Despite the conventional wisdom of "dress rehearsals" in the third preseason game, I don't think we game planned at all in this game.

Just as one example, the Texans have one of the best young corners in the game in Dunta Robinson and an average at best journeyman on the other side in Demarcus Faggins. In a real game, we'd put T.O. (or Terry) on Faggins and absolutely wear him out. Instead, we went at Robinson quite a bit early. Why?

As another, we played backup corners in the second quarter with our "starting" defense to see if those guys could play. Would we do that in a real game? Obviously not. Some and maybe all of those guys won't even be on the team for the Giants game.

We also went right back to Witten on the same side of the field for his TD one play after a bad miscommunication between Romo and Witten. That feels much more like what happens in practice (What was that? Run it again!) than a real game.

And this isn't even counting all our starters who were out -- Glenn, Fasano, Hoyte, Newman.

I'd have liked to have seen our lines play a little better, and I didn't always like Romo's footwork. But overall, this wasn't played anything like a real game, "Governor's Cup" or no.

Wow! Just wow!

Dear lord dude, I think your being WAY overoptimistic. You can't just add players and then expect a certain drop in opposing production. Would Newman have been able to stop Andre Johnson at the goaline? Maybe... But definitely not for sure. Would Terry Glenn have been able to cover another 5 yards to grab that catch? Probably not... That was a chuck and pray play, and furthermore, there was a safety up top, so chances are Glenn would have been nailed pretty hard and though he has good hands, it would have been difficult to see him hold onto it.

Remember last year when some Boys fans said that TO was worth 3-4 points extra a game and therefore, by taking games you lost by that amount and converting them to wins, you should be around 12-4??? How did that work out for you?

You analyze football like nerds play D&D. My 96 rated cornerback with 95 speed and 89 vertical shuts down your 94 rated possession receiver production by a factor of 2...

Unless they are vastly overpaid free agents, of course.

Really, that was just a snip, but this entire post from of all people a Skins fan is absolutely hilarious.
