It will take at least two years to fix the defense

Hatcher is going for the $ and will surely be gone. The cuboards completely bare. Probably the weekest position besides OLB.

Claiborne has soft written all over him. And they could have had a starting DT and a LB had they stayed put. Thats on Jerry all day.

Carter has no instincs. Great athlete. If someone steals your purse, he'll catch'em.

Wilber seems too big to play 4-3 OLB. Does he fit anywhere?

It seems DeMarcus has peaked. He's not a DE. getting alot of $$$$

The linebacking is a huge issue. The guys they're trotting out there now have a couple career tackles. Do they spend the entire draft on DE, DT, OLB, DE, DT, OLB?

dont want to rehash this becasue there have been several threads about this already

reading those threads, it is pretty clear that if we use our resources appropriately, the defense can be retooled in 1 off season from where we are right now

Im not ready to give up on Carter or Mo. After watching some of Claiborne from last year and earlier this year I think he will work out. Hes not going to be Dieon or anything but he will, IMO get the job done and improve.
The D-Line is a trainwreck and Im not sure exactly how they will begin to fix it.

Carter has no instincts? That couldn't be further from the truth. The guy was absolutely lights out last season. Everyone knew it was going to take him, and most of the other defenders, a season to get used to a new scheme. No on expected it to be this bad, but at the same time no one expected to lose 75% of the front seven.

I give Carter and Claiborne one more season. Before his last injury Claiborne was really starting to turn a corner. I think if we stick with a press scheme and just let him play, he becomes our best DB.

D Line for sure needs major revamp.

I agree. Carter is a beast... he just seems to be catching on slowly. Natural talent for sure and I think its worth another season to develope further.

It's just so hard to judge anyone on the defense right now because the corners are playing so soft and the dline is getting zero pressure. I am not giving everyone free passes, but I would be shocked if you see any starters (outside of the defensive line replacement players) replaced in the offseason.

You have to find a way to scheme to get Carter lose to use his athletic ability. Like, I don't know, a zone blitz or two...

you may not be able to be a great defense after one off season. but with the right moves you can be much better. does'nt take alot to be better than we are now. maybe a goal of forcing one punt a game

If they cut Ware and Austin, they can sign 3 to 4 top young free agents. Add in 2 early drafts on defense and you could upgrade 5 to 6 positions on defense.

They also have several young players getting valuable experience this season like Wilcox, Heath and Holloman.

Players like Carter and Claiborne were good last season. It's possible they could rebound next year.

Ya no way were going to get 8 new starters this off season for the d.

Who said 8?

They probably need about 4 including Ware's replacement.

Hopefully at least half of the injured players can remain healthy next season (i.e. Lee, Claiborne, Crawford, Bass, Durant, etc..).

Can we cut Ware and Austin prior to June 1st and designate them as post June cuts?? If that's not an option, will we have money to go after Linval Joseph? He could be gone early IMO.

Considering we keep the Tampa 2 we need 3 impact players on D:

A pass rushing DE
An young 3 Technique DT
An impact WLB

If we can somehow draft, trade or sign those 3 key players in free agency we can work with what we have. That is of course if Crawford returns, Claiborne finally pans out and we resign Hayden, Selvie & Spencer on the cheap. We would have to invest the whole draft on front seven personell and add a couple of FA's.

I'm often surprised by how quickly teams can turn the corner with the right system in place. It normally doesn't take three years.

Yep, Bill Polian was on 103.3 today and he said you could get the D fixed in one offseason. Said it's true that one of the advantages is that young players can come in and play right away in this defense because it's so easy to learn -- said they turned over linebackers at Indy all the time because Peyton ate up so much of the cap.

Also said that as bad as the D is, and it can't be fixed in the next two games, we can easily make the playoffs because the next two teams we play are very flawed themselves, especially the Skins.

DT, MLB that can stay on the field, A safety and a DE.

however long it takes to get impact players at those positions.
