TOKYO (Reuters) – An aquarium in Japan is shocking visitors with its Christmas display -- using an eco-friendly electric eel to illuminate the lights on its holiday tree.

Each time the eel moves, two aluminum panels gather enough electricity to light up the 2-meter (6 ft 6 in) tall tree, decked out in white, in glowing intermittent flashes.

The aquarium in Kamakura, just south of Tokyo, has featured the electric eel for five years to encourage ecological sensitivity.

This year, it added a Santa robot that sings and dances when visitors stomp on a pad.

So turning a wild animal into a living battery encourages "environmental sensitivity"?

I swear I will never understand the "environmental" mindset.

I warm up our house with my own natural gas. The wife complains about the smell but I tell her...Honey the money we save doing this means more money for you to shop. She holds her nose and nods in approval. :p:

Has anyone ever grabbed an electric eel? The shock can measure up to 650 volts based on the size of the eel.

1m = about 650 volts

:laugh2: Wooooo that would hurt.

I watched Wildboys grab a giant electric eel a few times in a row. They were hurtin.....
