Not looking great but anythings possible.
I had said it during the offseason and my opinion hasn't really changed, this year was going to be a year we prep more for the future. We have a lot of young guys on the DL and in the secondary, we probably needed to see how Dak would do and who he could actually work with going forward, etc.
So we can actually see what we have and what we need, so we can allocate salary cap dollars in FA most efficiently for Dak and this OL's career. If we went and signed an expensive guy on the DL and one of the 5 young DL we had stepped up, i'd feel pretty stupid. It was a DB heavy draft, were we able to actually get some starters out of it? What if Jaylon plays better at the end of the year?
This is really the first offseason where we're going to have a lot of cap. Dak is in Year 2, now we can see the biggest needs for this team going into year 3 and 4 of his contract, and years beyond that.
I don't think anyone really *expected* this though and the interior DL sucks. We were still expected to be a heavy playoff favorite. I'll be less disappointed *if* it's a down year (still a long season left) if we actually get some damn players this offseason with our space.
*Disclaimer: This is similar to how I would have approached the last 2 years of Dak/Zeke's contracts and may not be the actual plan. And I know it's probably not a popular opinion, but I'd have gone a little cheap for one year (that we were still expected to go deep in the playoffs), to get everything situated with Dak.
