I spent the first 17 years of my life growing up in the Philly suburbs. Eagles fans galore. Nary a Cowboys fan in sight.

In 1992, I moved up to Wilkes-Barre, PA to go to college. For those of you who don't know, Wilkes-Barre in the 90s was referred to as the "arm pit of PA". Lots of coal crackers up there. Burly men and women. On the weekends, we would go to the mall and all I would see were the dudes getting out of their Iroc Z's wearing the Apex Cowboys Jackets. They were everywhere! Everyone was a Cowboys fan. But were they for real? Did their Apex jacket unzipped and pulled off of their shoulders make them a fan? I did not question their loyalty. I simply put my fandom gear away in my closet and never made eye contact.

Now it's 2017. I work in a small, crappy town in NJ. A town that is eerily similar to Wilkes-Barre in the 1990s. As this season wore on, the "Cowboys Fans" are beginning to rear their ugly heads once again. I am seeing Cowboys gear being worn by the "townies" everyday.

This story has no meaning. Nor do I know why I wrote it. I am just impressed that I was able to use the word "nary" in a sentence.

For all you young-ans, below is the famous Cowboys Apex Jacket of the 90s. Behold it's beauty! If you are lucky enough to own one, please wear it correctly: Unzipped 3/4 of the way and pulled off of your shoulders.

When i think of 90s appeal I always think of those 90s starter jackets they would sell for each team. The Cowboys one was sweet.

Here is the one I bought in 1996 "on line" before it was really "online" lol

If you look at the 4th picture... they custom cut EVERYTHING, Every little letter from a piec of leather.
Some of the logos are 4 layers of leather.

I mention it because I love the attention to detail and work involved when its done this way. :)

I was able to obtain a lot of Cowboys paraphernalia back then. I had recently graduated college and took my first job as a Footlocker manager. My daughter took one of my Jackets and claimed it as her own. It wasn't one of my Apex's but a cool retro one. I Don't feel comfortable with her wearing it around, I am afraid someone will steal it or she will just leave it somewhere. She is a fan but not an avid one, she just wants to wear it because it's a cool jacket.

So, as any proper Cowboy fan dad would, I just let her wear it even though it's too big. That seems to be in style too. At least I know she is being raised right.

I still have my '93 Apex Cowboys Jacket in good shape. It was a rare one, because the big star on the back is upside down. :star:

Max - I went to Temple University during the 90's, lived in Philly for more than 20 years, so I feel your pain. But I also think that it's unfair.

I say that a Cowboys fan outside of Dallas can't be insincere or bandwagon. If you lived in Wilkes-Barre (btw I like the town, good regular folk), you'd know that if you identify as a Cowboys fan, everybody knows. Your family knows. Your friends know. Your neighbors know. And when the Cowboys are not doing well, it doesn't matter if you're wearing your jersey or not, they'll find you and let you know.

The 1989 1-15 season was insufferable. So was the pickle juice game, the loss to the Texas, etc. In every one of those, while I was living in Philly, I heard it. I heard it every time I left my house.

I've never stopped wearing my jersey or showing my pride, and years like this make it all worth it. But I'm never going to disrespect a fellow fan who lives outside of Texas - because I know what they've gone through.

I'm pretty sure Jimmy Johnson wore one of those or one similar during his tenure. Maybe even during one of the Superbowl games.

Absolutely. It's the jacket that he's wearing when he shouts "How bout dem Cowboys!"
