It's Time To Replace Greg Ellis

I don't know if it is time this year but I doubt it is far away.

Oh my god. The mileage philo is going to get out of this is going to be impressive. At least we knew the back-up QB situation would be resolved in a short period of time. So we knew to massive overflow of repetitive posts would eventually end. This one can go for a while.

We all know that Ellis is going to be around at least though some part of TC. Thats about 6 months x 3 to 4 different threads a day griping about Ellis and how he should be cut.

That's alot of space taken up on this board.:laugh2:

But....to answer the question:

No, Ellis does not NEED to be cut, especially at this time of year. We see how his rehab goes. He's not expensive and he can help us. I see nothing wrong with looking for someone to groom for a replacement as Ellis won't be with us too much longer.

But the answer is no. There's zero advantage to just flat out cutting him now.

Yeah it's crazy to think Ellis will be around much longer, this injury is very serious and I doubt the Cowboys expect him to be ready for 2007, they are saying all the right things but come on Ellis is 32 years old. I would hope they are planning on addressing the situation in the upcoming draft where there's a good supply of talent.

Was Greg Ellis worth that #1 pick all those years ago. I'd have to say no.

He was and still is because he is a solid player with great character unlike the player who everyone is always saying we should have picked instead of Ellis. Hopefully this year we can see what he can really do with Phillips turning him loose. I just wish that would have happened years ago.

Ellis was the #8 pick overall. 3 of the guys picked ahead of him aren't even in the league at this point. 1 of them has played 7 games in the last 3 years.

Yeah. Ellis sucks.

Yup the only guy in that draft you could say was a slam dunk better than Ellis is Payton ......

And we never had a shot at that guy.

most of these players are on other teams and their own stats DO NOT merit their place in the draft either. your "expectations" of what a 1st round talent should be seem clouded by what you wish things were.

today, i'm glad we took ellis over moss. PERIOD. he's been much more of a team player and other than the initial reaction to moving to LB after an entire career at DE, he's been spotless as for his personal record.

who on this list around Ellis would you rather us have taken? who on this list other than payton obviously, WARRANTED their own pick in this round?

compared to the players around him we did damn well getting ellis where we did.

i would ask what a 1st round pick would have to do IN YOUR EYES to warrant that pick but i'm scared to death you'll tell me and like watching a train wreck i can't stop, i'll have to read it and gufaw a lot.

I have no more to say on this topic and will not going forward.

the posts from this guy are resembling posts from the old star telegram board and since one of the guys who ruined that board has become a poster here recently, well something stinks.

this is interesting I think I will Highlight Blue for Blue Chip, Green for Average and Red for Bust and Black for the players I know nothing about...

NE didn't fair to well who was shopping for their groceries at the time

If Greg Ellis comes back from his injury I think he probably is relegated to being a situational pass rusher. I find nothing wrong with that personally. I don't think I would hand him any job and I doubt Ellis would want anything handed to him. Sometimes the team simply has to move on from what they have always done. Well, ever since we have drafted him we have always had him in the starting lineup. If he comes back stronger than ever and takes the position, that is good for the team. If he plays the role of a situational pass rusher, that is good for the team. If he is strong against the run too, so much the better. I find it hard to believe he won't be one of the 53 best players on the team. Given that, why should we force him to move on? There are ways he can contribute.

You look at that whole first rd and the only two players that have really merited a first rd pick are Manning and Moss. Woodson- eh.

ellis is not the best pass rusher in the nfl. i don't think anyone ever thought he was but he is a solid player who will get us 7 or 8 sacks next year in a pass rushing role. i think he will come back just fine, and there really is no reason to spend a high draft pick on his future replacement. we did that last year and his name is carpenter. thats why we took him to play that spot

You can't know what a difficult injury this is from which to rehab.
As I have posted before, even if healed, there is this psychological barrier that keeps people from fully trusting the foot by walking, much less cutting, accelleration etc.
I don't think he'll be ready this training camp. Even if he is ready, it will take a year to be fully comfortable with the foot and he's no spring chicken.

yup Greg Ellis might have been the 8th best player in that draft if not even a notch or two better..huh funny how that worked out

well, he shut up on it, so i suppose after looking on the list and not finding a way to put ricky ray on there sometime after we picked, he gave it up and took his marbles and went home.

I understand your point, but you can't just say "everyone picked after him isn't better" and have that excuse Ellis. I think everyone expected a little more from the 8th pick, regardless of what the guys picked after him did.

He's been a solid player, and definitely better than alot of those guys after him, but not the playmaker that was expected. We picked Ware 3 picks later and he's already more dynamic than Ellis has ever been. You might have been discussing something else with philo (I dunno, I can't see it, and I don't read the quotes). If so, ignore me.
