I've been 'on the fence' for a while. Should we give up a pick(s) for a WR like Roy Williams of Detroit of Chad Johnson of Cincinnati? Previously I argued for one or the other as my decision to give up a pick(s) seemed to have already been affirmatively decided. But in tossing the plusses and minuses of both players, I came to this final personal conclusion: It is best for Dallas to get Jason Garrett the WR and RB he wants for his offense.
Whether you like it or not, Garrett becoming the team's Head Coach is an afterthought; I believe that an under-the-table "understanding" between him and Jones is already in place. I'm of the opinion that Capers ultimately decided not to come here, not because of Stewart, but because of Phillips. Capers knows that Phillips can spend more time coaching-up Stewart and the defense now that Garrett will be a practicing assistant head coach.
In essence, there is no room for Capers, and severely upgrading the defense will not be the priority this offseason; upgrading the offense will be. So why wait to get Garrett the players he needs until he officially becomes the head coach a season or two from now, when Dallas can get an early jump-start on that this offseason? After all, WRs Roy Williams and Chad Johnson are not exactly the timing-offense type WRs that Garret's offense covets. And at RB we still need that change of pace back that is more reliable than Julius Jones; and one can be had in the third round.
So let's just move on with the Roy Williams and Chad Johnson trade talk and focus on arguing the credentials of WRs in this draft that can add youth and a timing element to the offense.
