I've decided! I want to keep our picks, to get Garrett his future players!

I've been 'on the fence' for a while. Should we give up a pick(s) for a WR like Roy Williams of Detroit of Chad Johnson of Cincinnati? Previously I argued for one or the other as my decision to give up a pick(s) seemed to have already been affirmatively decided. But in tossing the plusses and minuses of both players, I came to this final personal conclusion: It is best for Dallas to get Jason Garrett the WR and RB he wants for his offense.

Whether you like it or not, Garrett becoming the team's Head Coach is an afterthought; I believe that an under-the-table "understanding" between him and Jones is already in place. I'm of the opinion that Capers ultimately decided not to come here, not because of Stewart, but because of Phillips. Capers knows that Phillips can spend more time coaching-up Stewart and the defense now that Garrett will be a practicing assistant head coach.

In essence, there is no room for Capers, and severely upgrading the defense will not be the priority this offseason; upgrading the offense will be. So why wait to get Garrett the players he needs until he officially becomes the head coach a season or two from now, when Dallas can get an early jump-start on that this offseason? After all, WRs Roy Williams and Chad Johnson are not exactly the timing-offense type WRs that Garret's offense covets. And at RB we still need that change of pace back that is more reliable than Julius Jones; and one can be had in the third round.

So let's just move on with the Roy Williams and Chad Johnson trade talk and focus on arguing the credentials of WRs in this draft that can add youth and a timing element to the offense.

Discuss! :D

RW is only 26 and in theory could play for 10 years.

Here's what I'm talking about....We can potentially have Limas Sweed at #22. Check out this bio:

Limas Sweed, WR, Texas
6'4" 220 ibs., 4.5 40

What is it with Texas and these king sized receivers? The big Sweed is a Texas native and he is aclone of the Detroit Lions’ Roy Williams, who also played at Texas; he just isn’t as bow legged and has proven to be more durable, in college anyway. Sweed is a talented 5th year receiver that is a solid contender for the 2007 Biletnikoff Award. Did I mention Sweed is durable? He has 33 consecutive starts going into the 2007 season. Sweed made a good choice to return to Texas for his senior year, where with another strong performance, Sweed could emerge as a top 15 pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Last year in 2006 he started all 13 games and was a first-team All-Big 12 award winner. He recorded a team leading 43 catches for 801 yards and 12 TDs and scored on a touchdown pass in 10 out of his 13 games. Speaking of Roy Williams, he (Sweed) broke Williams' school record by catching a touchdown pass in seven consecutive games. Sweed steps up in big games; he made three huge receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown in the Alamo Bowl win against Iowa.

Sorry, but if a guy like Sweed is there at 22 you can't look past it. He's already better than Roy Williams who disappears in big games in the NFL and has work-ethic problems. Like I said, thr pluses of drafting Garret's guys far outweight the minuses that guys like Roy Williams bring to the party. JMHO

I fear any deals with BP. He will amke a fool out of Jerry taking advantage of Jerry's friendship and trust. If we need to make a trade let's just move up a couple of spots to snag a great CB/WR/RB, using next year's picks. If nothing is availab le just stay put.

I'd prefer Felix Jones instead of D-Mac. Look at the last few years. Jamal Lewis was bkup to Travis Henry at Tenn. Who had the better pro career? Same for Priest Holmes and Ricky Williams (UT). Ryan Grant that was so good in GB this year shared the backfield with our own Julius Jones and he looks to be as good a runner to me. I'm sure there are other examples I'm just forgetting.

And do we want to pay the kind of $$$ it will take to sign the 1st pick in the draft? Will that so deplete our cap that we may have to let some of our quality bkups go else where? I sure hope Jerry doesn't let this past PO loss clould his judgment into thinking we are one player away from a dynasty. I saw a ranking of top 100 players that had good CBs and WRs ranked right around where we'll be drafting. I think we should stay put and remember the lesson of Joey Galloway. I Detroit wants to get rid of Roy Williams let them take a 2nd this year and a 3rd next year. Who's to say Malcom Kelly or some other WR this year won't be as good?...

Sweed took a dive this year but can help himself a lot at the combine. i think someone is going to get good value in the second on him. If thats us then so be it.

His speed has come into question and hes been damaged goods.

RW doesnt always give it his all and seems to be injury prone a la Henry.

And as trick poitned out the WR position is very dicey.

Jamaal Lewis played for the Ravens and won Super Bowls and rushing titles. Methinks your confused.

He is saying that the backups have had had better success. He lists that Jamal Lewis was a backup to Henry.

The logic is flawed, but he agrees that Lewis is better than Henry.

You are crackers.
You just saw the best Offense ever get beat in a Superbowl by a team that
was able to mix up coverage and generate pressure.
I'm all for Roy Williams coming on board for #28 but come on. No Defense?
Don't be provoking me into spending more time on this thread

I meant they played together at University of Tennesee, not the Titans. My bad. But I don't see why the "logic" is bad. I'm just saying there are several cases in the last few years in which the bkup played as well or better in the pros as the featured back, and that we don't have to mortage anything to fill our needs in the draft...

Ahh kk that makes sense. Both are great backs though.

Dude, Limas Sweed is not better than Roy Williams.

Roy Williams has exactly one season out of four that he actually played all sixteen games. He also only has one season with over 900+ yards. That should wave a red flag at you.

As for Sweed. He is big and strong. He has never had a prolific passing QB like Romo throwing to him. He has pretty good concentration and I think TO and Ray Sherman could do a lot for Sweed. It would give Dallas a possession receiver. If the well-hyped Stanback becomes a speedy threat, that would be a great combination for the future.

Sweed needs to do well at the combine.

Malcolm Kelly over limus sweed all day! Thanks

I agree, but Kelly is going to go quick. Most likely at 11 to Buffalo unless the Pats*aren't able to retain Moss. They may go after Kelly with the 7th pick. Though they have needs at CB, safety (if Harrison retires), and LB.
