Speed is overrated when you have great instincts... Now when you have the instincts and the speed like Earl Thomas then you are considered "special"

The problem is that DBs that lack top end speed tend to fade out at a younger age. Charles Woodson or Darrell Green can lose speed as they age and still be fast enough.

A guy like Byrd (4.68 forty) does not have that same luxury.

Those other guys are CBs. I hear ya, but how many safeties do you know that are burners?

That's how. By giving a 27 year old safety (who turns 28 this year) a 6-year contract.

He'll be turning 34 in his release year, assuming they don't cut him before that. These are exactly the kind of contracts you want to avoid.

It means they hopefully franchise him and try and figure out who to cut next year to keep him.

They're in a tough spot with the cap going forward. Either that or they just let Jimmy Graham walk next year.
