He flashed whenever he had the ball in his hands last year. Turned dumpoffs into big plays. He’s a YAC threat at the TE position.

Travis Kelce was asked about TE’s that remind him of himself back in Feb. He singled out Jake Ferguson as a guy he’s excited to watch in the future.

TE isn’t a need.

I'll take Kelce, you can have Ferguson...

Tight end is definitely a need!

Lol, he made a couple of plays where they schemed him open disguising him as a blocker. In the 3 games Schultz was out or left early and he was the primary TE he had 7 rec for 60 yards. His ceiling is blocking TE who’ll get 350 yards receiving every couple of years!

I'm excited about him too. Doesn't mean that I don't believe we should sign a veteran just in case, though. Going from being the second TE with very few opportunities to the main TE with lots of opportunities is a gigantic step and we can't be absolutely sure Ferguson can make it. I like that we have a second guy in Hendershot who also showed potential, but I'm hoping we either add a vet or a third TE to the mix within the first three rounds. After beefing up our receivers by adding Cooks, it would be a shame to have TE be less of a weapon that it was.

Fans were saying this about Schultz a few years ago. Ferguson may be just fine as a Schultz replacement, and might even turn out better than him because he's a better blocker. I just think it is important that while we recognize he potentially could be better than Schultz, he also could be more of what you are projecting. I don't believe he will be, but I can't say with certainly that he won't.

I haven’t seen anything to indicate his ceiling is close to Schultz and think we should be looking for much better than Schultz. Going into the season with a couple of really slow TEs with a position (TE) dependent QB seems like a really bad idea!

Strong sample size there.

350 yard ceiling huh. Give Ferguson Schultz’ 94 targets he averaged the last three seasons and he’ll have 350 by mid season.

He’s not even a top option on the team after they draft a TE in round 1

Schultz was a slow tight end. He ran a 4.75 at the combine. Ferguson ran a 4.77. For tight ends, the important thing is understanding how to find the open spots, using their bodies well to shield off defenders and being technically sound. Jason Witten made a Hall of Fame career out of those things. Sure, speed makes things easier, but it's not the biggest attribute needed.

“A couple of really slow TE’s”

Tell me you know nothing about Ferguson without telling me you know nothing.

I hope so, but i remember when everyone was hyped on Schultz taking over from Jarwin.

I'm not sweating the TE position that much and I'm optimistic either Ferg and or Hendershot will step up. However, I don't know that we saw enough of either to be fully confident they will fully replace the production. I would still give a look at seeing what Austin Hooper commands, or see what some of the Tampa TEs have left between Brate and Howard or look at Rudolph or Irv Smith. Aside from Hooper who all will be lower $$$ signings that either provide veteran presence or offer some intriguing upside.

Ferguson’s official combine time was 4.81, what’s more his running looks labored and lumbering!

Dont get too excited. The TE position is mostly an emergency outlet for the QB here.
Before last year Schultz got huge target numbers and most off designed plays
I think MM wants to get back to spreading the ball around, not trying to force it to anyone so I expect more TE production
I like Ferguson but I don’t know if he’s set for a breakout season or just a progression as he learns the position better

Lol, uh, you know they actually test this stuff before the draft right? His official combine was 4.81 and 4.77 pro day. Both were achieved after a couple of months training to run faster and both are fairly slow to slow for the position!

I'm just going to take it that you don't like him. You seem to be overexaggerating to make a point. He looked like a tight end. Had a few spectacular plays and had a few not-so-spectacular ones. What that means for him going forward is hard to say, but I don't think we can check mark him as a future superstar or future dud at the moment. He looks like he belongs in this league, but we don't know whether that's a No. 1 or No. 2 spot.
