Jalen Hurts out this week due to blood clot

My understanding of blot clots is they need to stabilize. He'll get a shot of Lovenox and then they'd typically want him on a blood thinner for 3-6 months as their is a known provocation (cleat to calf.)

The blood thinner doesnt break up the clot, but prevents further clotting development. His body has to naturally break it down. The important thing now is the clot stabilizes in place. Apparently they detected movement afrer initially clearing him to play. He cant risk it further as the clot could work its way to the heart, lungs, or brain causing a heart attack, pulmonary embolism or stroke.

Im sure a doc can and will come along shortly and correct my "understanding" though.

Point is, he could be out awhile.
I don't know about most of this but the timeline seems in line with other athletes (though I mostly remember them in hockey players).

Man it seems like this happens too often now. Olave was another one. These guys are too young to be throwing clots. Eagles can suck it, but heal up.
I agree, but in this case it’s an injury not an illness or not a symptom of an underlying condition.

Hurts got cleated in the calf. Basically a vein just under the skin got damaged by the cleat and got blocked up.

They gave him ibuprofen to reduce swelling and hope the clot loosens up.

Phillies pitcher Wheeler’s season was ended last year due to a blood clot.

Mind you the cause of the clot was different and he needed surgery.

So I guess we are still in the wait and see mode with Jalen. What the doctors decide is needed to treat it properly.

The hope is the clot will dissipate without the use of blood thinners. You may not play if you’re on any blood thinners. Holding him out indicates they’re hoping to get him back. Not tanking.

Not good. I hope they get on this quickly so it doesn’t move to his lungs or heart. Don’t play around with blood clots. Scary situation. I hope he’s okay

My only question would be based on how superficial the clot is and if that impacts the diagnosis. My (personal) experience is with a deep vein thrombosis (and limited training as a medic.)

It may be possible with a smaller more superficial clot there are alternative approaches and levels of concern are diminished.

That said, they seem to be considering it very serious at this point so its probably moot speculation on my part.

That’s why they make Eliquis, I wish him the best, I wouldn’t want this to happen to any player

Fortunately, it’s not a deep vein thrombosis. It surface level, just below the skin, even if left untreated there’s only a minuscule chance it gets to the heart or lungs

It looks like a bruise or a rash rather than some big hematoma
