Yep it's kind of funny in a way.
I don't mean any disrespect to Tolbert.
But he was a 3rd rounder that just didn't develop the way we had hoped.
He's out of the top 3, which means he's not getting consistent snaps, and we have other guys on the roster like Mingo and Flournoy who could take those snaps (and possibly develop into something greater than Tolbert), plus both are on the roster for next season, and Tolbert is not. It's just the way the NFL works.
Maybe we could give Tolbert and a 6th for a 5th, something like that, but to suggest we get a 3 or a 4 for him is not realistic.

Tolbert is a solid NFL receiver, but he's not in the top 3 rotation here, which means his snaps are limited. He's also at the end of the rope on his rookie deal. The Cowboys will not be bringing him back IMO under a new deal.
So you get something for him, even if it's just a 6th or 7th or a swap.
We have guys we want to look at like Mingo and Flournoy who can take his snaps, and they are not at the end of the rope yet, as both are signed next season. It's just how the NFL works. One of the reasons teams usually grab a WR in the draft late even if they don;t seem to have a need.
Tolbert is not awful, just did not develop the way we hoped and is not at the end of his rope contract wise. So you try to get something for him.
This could be a good sign that we want Pickens back.

Agree but when you think about it,, was he given enough opportunities???
 
His examples were basically what Philly just did. If someone wants to swap Tobert for a LB, CB, S who is expiring or can be cut for cheap next year, I would be fine with that. See what he has the remainder of the year and decide in the offseason.
 
Probably trading him for another player we knew heard of that never suits up.

Very valid question.
I think the Cowboys are bad at player development overall and it's because the organization is not honest with itself.

Think of all the hype every year about our picks. We make some really good ones (Micah, CeeDee, TSmith etc) but we over hype others. It's like that story "The Emperor has no Clothes."
Remember how Josh Ball was an absolute steal, a first round talent in the 4th? Then Waletzco, etc. That's just 2 examples and there are hundreds of others. And they never developed.
Jerry and Stephen are so busy patting themselves on the back, thinking they are smarter than 31 other teams, and no one in the org. has the sack to tell them to stop.
So we get over hyped players that generally don't develop, like Tolbert.
As a 3rd round pick, he should be in the WR rotation (meaning top 3 WRs), but he is not. Bringing in Pick this year pushed him back, but he did have a chance last year in the top 3, and he just didn't seize the opportunity enough.
Now he's outside the top 3 and has run out of time (contract wise).

Oh I totally totally agree how much time does an NFL team really have to develop a player though
