Earlier on ESPN Adam Sheftner was talking about potential big name cuts. He mentioned San Diego cutting Jamal Williams. I know he missed most of last year with a torn biceps, but I think as a back-up to Ratliff, he would thrive. Wade of course knows him and Igor being here doesn't hurt.

Will be interesting come Friday on what big names are cut.

I don't believe he'd be a backup. If Spears is not brought back, then you move Ratliff to DE, and Williams is the starter there at NT. And yes, I know the argument people will have about moving a probowler from one position to another. Since DE was Ratliff's position when he arrived here, I reckon he could return to that spot.

I don't see how we could not sign him.

Edit - It should be noted that I make this comment oblivious to JW having any knee issues, and not being entirely sure how old he is. In making this post, I was simply enamored with the name, liking the idea of adding a decent fat body for depth to spell Ratliff when needed.

If Jamal Williams ends up in free agency we go get him and it's that simple? Back up Ratliff? How bout start at nose tackle and move Ratliff to DE? I know I know Ratliff is a pro bowl DT but the same will happen at DE and he will generate more pressure from that spot believe it or not.

The amount of pressure that will be generated from the left and right side will be ridiculous and running up the gut will become almost non existant with Williams there. Bradie James and Brooking will be fluid to the ball carrier and can attack the QB up the middle a bit more to continue some pressure from the middle of the defense to the opposing QB's.

Jamal Williams becomes available, then we should go get him and from what I am hearing from Jerry about our changes this may already be an idea in the mix.

Wow this is almost too perfect of a fit for Jamal.

Would he be willing to play 2nd fiddle?

That's the main question.

I think his knees are about shot.

If he accepts that and will take a cheap contract to back up only? Maybe.

But I still doubt it. We should get younger there, not older. Just let Wade draft a kid who can do the same thing.

Take a flyer in the draft on Terrence Cody? 3rd or 4th? Don't think he's going in the first 2 rounds and he dominates those middle gaps.

I know his weight is an issue, but these mountains coming out of college usually have that problem.

with all the 34 teams out there now, i think cody could easily go in the 2nd round.

but i agree that he's obviously a big risk due to his weight issues.

Definitely a risk in the top 50 picks but by the earlier rounds of the 3rd I'd trade right up.

If we could get Antrel Rolle, Iupati and another o-lineman in the 2nd we could make a run at Cody especially if a Jamal Williams comes available and Ratliff moves to end.

Talk about improving the backfield, getting younger and just as big on the o-line and setting up our d-line for the next 3-4 seasons.

That would be a heck of an offseason in my opinion. Our rb stable remains the same. If we get 2 starters out of this draft I will be elated. Some real good o-lineman will still be available in round 2.

Even if it's 2 new guards Bigg can move to LT. Don't be surprised, personnel changes are definitely on the horizon and it's not just player cuts, it's players moving positions on the o-line and d-line.

I heard they were trying him at QB, which is why that's the only position we're not looking at in the draft. I know he's great at NT, but just think what he could do with that motor with the ball in his hands.

I know now. If others finally will accept it by then...so be it. I don't believe it though. All next year someone is going to think he needs to move to DE.

:laugh2: Have him run with the ball behind Bigg and Gurode. Gonna be the NFL's Tim Tebow.

Fair enough. What to do about Spears then? Will we get a fair deal and do we want to let him go? There's no Olshansky waiting and not sure who we could tap in through the draft worth 1 of our first 2 picks.

Sir, I highly respect your posts, and what you offer this board, but as a grown man, I don't repeat after anyone!! I think Ratliff would be a very good DE. I don't expect you, or many others here to agree. But its my opinion. I am allowed that here...right?

We do not need Williams! We can get a more than adequate back up on the first day of the draft (3rd round). Time to get younger not add age.

The respect is mutual. It is just not going to happen though. I am being straight with you. He is not going to move to DE.

I wasn't aware Williams had knee issues.

But since we're moving Ratliff to DE, I think it's imperative we sign another DT as well as draft one.

;)
