I wasn't aware Williams had knee issues.

But since we're moving Ratliff to DE, I think it's imperative we sign another DT as well as draft one.

I would LOVE to have Williams on this roster, just not at the expense of moving Ratliff from a position he has basically mastered at NT. Ratliff is unique...if Williams were to come in and not be the starter, maybe come in on running downs every now and then I would be all over this move, and I think it would help this defense become even more dominate.

Spears is probably not leaving and Ratliff definitely is NOT going to be moved to DE.

If that's the case than I am good as long as Spears doesn't soak us in the deal. I don't like letting reliable first rounders go. But....... I guess we'll just forget what Jerry said about d-line changes personnel wise?

I don't think it's FA or draft fodder coming out of his mouth. I do believe Jerrys see's we have a unique opportunity if we can get some more personnel help to go deep into the playoffs and attempt at playing while being host to the SB. I do believe that he believes this is what we need to do after the Minny loss.

Yes because our probowl NT is such a liability on defense.

You could make a case he's a liability in the run game a little.

That being said he's still a beastly NT and should not be moved to DE fulltime.

The run defense has been pretty solid since he's been there. There's been a game or two here or there where we've had some issues, but usually its tackling thats been the problem.

Ratliff is amazing, but we have no depth.

Throw another rolling-eye smiley at me and I'll break your dogs hind legs.

True.

There's just some games where runs are going right up the middle, but I'm just nitpicking.

I don't see how we could not sign him.

Edit - It should be noted that I make this comment oblivious to JW having any knee issues, and not being entirely sure how old he is. In making this post, I was simply enamored with the name, liking the idea of adding a decent fat body for depth to spell Ratliff when needed...

I know everyone is getting a good laugh, but if Williams is on the market, don't be surprised to see him at Jerry's World. At least for a looksey.

I don't even wait for him to go to the market.

He is a need, and you've got to see him as such.

Our run defense was good, but it wasn't great. You add Jamal Williams who is a prototypical nose tackle, and all of a sudden James and Brooking will be in the backfield making playings.

You can also give Ratliff more of a break.

You don't want Williams in there 3 downs obviously.

He is a two down player. Give him 400-600 snaps for the year.

Mix up Bowen/Hatcher/Ratliff on 1st and 2nd downs.

You need to let Bowen and Hatcher fight out for the 3-4 DE starting position.

I know I'm making this sound like demote the pro bowl nose tackle to a backup position. But I'm not.

I'm just saying use him at his best ability as a pass rusher. I would use him in passing situations, and also put him in at tackle and end throughout the game.

Spears should be gone because he isn't great against the pass or the run.

I just hope that if I'm as interested in us getting Jamal Williams, Wade Phillips should be even more interested.

This guy is one of the best run stuffing nose tackles in the nfl.

We were 4th against the run but we were ranked 9th in the nfl in rushing yards allowed per attempt.

A player like Jamal Williams would allow us to become a stifling defense.

And I don't know what else Jerry would be looking at in terms of improving our defensive line.

Spears definitely needs to be replaced.

In our system we basically run our traditional DTs outside anyway...
Igor and Spears are Run Stoppers first, then we run our DE (Ratt) inside-fastest way to get to the QB.

Just get Jamal and put him where Spears is now.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Why some people want to move a probowler out of his position is beyond me.

Then do a rotation of Bowen and Hatcher outside and move Jamal in to give Rattliff a break.

Why people want to move Ratliff

- He isn't great against the run
- He is a pass rusher, and could flourish in space
- Reduces amount of double teams

Why doesn't anyone notice when Rat is asked if he'd move to DE he always says he'd rather not? Do you think that's because he knows he'd get more sacks from the end position, and he'd just rather keep his sack numbers around 7 a year? Come on, watch us play - in Wade's defense the pass rushers are the OLBs and the NT. The ends control their space. Wade knows that a big body isn't getting there most times from the C gap. That's why our most athletic lineman is our NT. And it's gonna stay that way.

I agree with posters above that feel we can find a backup in the 3rd or 4th round of the draft. Just say no to Cody. Showing up in shape meant a large amount of money to the young man, and he couldn't do it. That lack of dedication should raise anyone's eyebrows.

Did Wade change his defense since Luis Castillo got 7 sacks in 2006?
