Former No. 1 NFL draft pick JaMarcus Russell has been removed from the coaching staff at the high school he attended in Mobile, Alabama, and is facing a lawsuit accusing him of taking money meant as a donation to the school.

“JaMarcus Russell was relieved of his volunteer coaching duties at Williamson High School during the fall of last year,” Mobile County Public School officials told WKRG Sports.

Russell is also facing a lawsuit alleging that he took a $74,000 check intended as a donation to the school and kept the money for himself. Chris Knowles, a local business owner who wrote the check, says Russell approached him about a donation to help the Williamson High School football team purchase weight room equipment, and Knowles gave Russell the donation by check. But the school allegedly never got any of that money, and Russell reportedly deposited it in a credit union and promptly withdrew $55,000 of that.

I think it was something ridiculous for that time. Like 60 million. Apparently he's broke.

Not even arguably. If we're talking just 1st overall picks, it has to be him. I went back to 1983 and couldn't find a bigger bust. There were some names I didn't recognize, but a bust at DT or LB doesn't hold as much weight as a QB that you paid over 60M before taking a single snap.

I remember watching his first game and the commentators gushing over him. He proceeded to look terrible. He quit the second he got paid.

I did not go back past the 90's so that was why I put the arguably in. I guess if you went all the way back to 1932 to the present you might find worse but when you factor in the Cap money wasted on him its pretty hard to find as bad

Yeah he was that final one to push it over the top IMO.

What a screw up. That type of thing killed teams when there was no rookie salary caps.
Plus the raiders have had some pretty bad luck with draft picks.

If I remember correctly, that was one of Al Davis's last mistakes. He fell in love with Jumonguses arm when he threw a pass like 80 yards while on his knees

Unbelievably, it took a couple more years for the NFL to realize a change in rookie contracts was needed.
Sam Bradford was the last kid to get "money for nothing".
A $50 million guarantee on his $86 million rookie contract. But yes, the Russell contract was the one that most likely put this into motion to act.

I don't get how these guys end up in this situation. Pay your taxes and an ultraconservative investment yielding 4% still clears 1M a year.

Yep. It's mind boggling. The interest alone on that kind of money sets you up for life. But not if you want to live the rich lifestyle.

I would feel pretty rich being able to spend 1M a year without any concern for having to save any of it. But I guess I have simpler tastes.

Most people would. There was a video out on how fast an NFL rookie QB spent 1M dollars. This was a rookie. He went through it every step of the way. I'm pretty sure it was that QB that got killed on the roadway. Drafted by Washington.

Never having to plan and stick to a budget.

Added reality you become an instant legitimate millionaire (having millions in the bank with a very low debt ratio) you end up having a lot of friends find you, they become your "posse", and then they all bleed you dry. THEN that debt ratio starts to climb because you can spend money and no one ever taught you the value of budgeting your money.

Hey, what's the big deal with a 5 million home or 300K car when you have the money to buy it? LOL
