Wait, where's all of the "Russel is a loser" or the "haha..this guy is asking for so much money because he know he sucks and its the only contract he'll ever get" crowd?

Yeah, there's noooooo ND bias on this board. None. :D

1 - Next CBA, make a formula or a rookie cap so that unproven commodities aren't handed 20-30 million dollars for having a good college career.

2 - Destroy these silly rookie holdouts.

3 - Improve your cap, don't get injured more for being a crap team.

4 - Everyone profits.

I agree. I think this it is stupid to pay out that kind of cash for someone who has not done anything at the NFL level. I think they should get a good sum of money but 30 mill guaranteed? I don't think so.

The Jets and Darrelle Revis completed a deal finally.

Usually the overall #1 is one of the first guys to sign. The Raiders are a freaking mess. I bet their offer is less than the Lions offer to Calvin Johnson and that's why Russell's agents aren't budging.

Russell should sit the entire season , enter draft next year so Brian Brohm and McFadden can be picked ahead of him...

True. It is not like Russell is going to get a better deal by sitting out the entire season and chances are he would get a lot less by holding out. After all while he would be sitting on his butt these up and coming college players will be making a name for themselves

What would really be interesting would be if Culpepper got healthy enough to start putting up good numbers and winning games. Raiders might think they'd be better off not signing Russell but instead trading rights to him (if that's allowed) to another team in return for a #1 pick in 08 along with additional picks and or 1-2 players. Or Raiders lose interest in signing Russell and just let him sit and then reenter the 08 draft. Bet Russell will slide down the draft boards much further then he could imagine and lose a lot of money.

Trading his rights is possible, but not practical. The team that received his rights would have to fit him under their rookie cap. Most teams would only be able to offer him the minimum.

The NFL needs to go to guaranteed contracts and then institute a rookie pay scale like the NBA has.

Even if he were to sign and get into camp today, I don't think there is anyway in hell Russell plays at any point early in the season, let alone the second game. Oakland signed Culpepper for this exact reason.

Hell Culpepper Get's hot and this kid may get to sit a while, be brought along slowly and actually have a chance to mature into a good player. This trial by fire approach to rookies is something I have never agreed was a good idea.

As far fetched as this may come off, does anyone think That these kids are coming in and holding out because Each one is billed as the next savior? If they knew they were coming in and that very few Rooks get to see the field let alone become the hope for salvation, A liitle Humility would deflate some of these heads and a little more respect would be given. His agent is trying to gas this boys head, why? Because he knows damn well that the contract he's gonna get will be huge.
But Let Culpeeper get hot, then it becomes a Hey Russell, take your time, you had no chance of starting anyway. By the way agent boy, tell him we are offering a 3 year 9 million all guaranteed no fluff deal. He can take it or he can go play in Canada for a year. Which, we don't care. You have until 5 O clock west coast time to let us know what ya'll gonna do.
This shyt has gotten out of hand. But hey the NFL saw a chance to make money so they allowed the present state of affairs so I can't say I feel to bad for them.
If Pac Man Jones Had a let's say 1.5 mill a year for his first three years had to sit and prove himself, actually earn his accolades not just have them bestowed upon him because of his college career, he might have a little more humility, A little more Awe, A little more appriciation for what he had. It may make some of these Prima Doggs wake the F up.

I know it's a stretch, I just wanna know what some of you think.

Is Culpepper even going to start? I saw their Pre Season game and I was really impressed. He was playing with the 3rd stringers, but IMO I think his days of being a productive QB are behind him. Walters looked pretty good. He was getting protection and he was making some good throws. I have a feeling they won't be as bad as everyone says.

Brady Quinn held out the first two weeks for camp and he ended up getting .. what ... 400k more than what the Browns originally offered. I understand a man has to look out for his money, but he could have made that money easily the first year by just hiring a great money manager. Why put yourself behind the learning curve and jeopardize your career for $400k? Likewise, Russell is an idiot. He better enjoy that extra 2-3 million he's holding out for, because he's sabatoging his entire career. I thought Russel's haters in the draft tend to go overboard, but he did show at LSU that he's not exactly a quick learner.

When was the last time you made 400k in a year or for signing your name? Quinn could get hurt in camp before the season starts and never play a down. Then that 400k could mean something. Besides that wasnt the sticking point in Quinn's hold out. But unless its your bank then I dont think we should be complaning about what any of these guys do.

That is one thing I think the NBA did right with the contracts was the rookie wage is set and the NFL should also be better at rewarding vets that earned the big payday vs the rookie that does not deserve that much.
That is the one thing I don't understand the NFL, is a multi billion dollar industry, and the money for the players aren't guaranteed that is one thing the NBA, has the upper hand on.
