Romo. is the man now, & for a while.. I'm a ''now fan'' not a ''what if'' guy...

wow, threads like this bring me humor....I agree that all teams want to make sure that they are covered at QB, but speculating on a specific guy being available at a specific time and (borderline) speculating that we will be bad enough the season prior to be high enough in the draft to select him is just nuts...that doesn't even include speculating that THIS guy will be the #1 pick in 3 or 4 years? What if this guy decides he likes beer and gets a gut and is not successful in football? what if the NFL defensive coordinators figure out these young, flashy running QB's and make them less effective by that time?

is that enough speculative rhetoric? No question he is talented but while JJ is here, this team won't be a #1 pick in the draft team...they aren't the giants or jags, nor will they be...

Highly doubtful. If the kid continues to play like he has this year for another year, maybe two, then he's going to be a top 3 pick.

We won't be in any position to select him.

More interestingly, the guy with the fumble return for TD in last night's game is the son of former Cowboys CB Mario Edwards.

I don't think anyone is going to unseat Romo after 3 years unless he decides to retire.

because of the cap and his contract Romo is here through 2016 at least. And as regards this kid, there is a lot of wood to chop before he gets to the NFL. So predicting him as our next QB is truly hilarious.

Wow. As long as we are in fantasy mode, no better way to follow up with the Clowney pick in 2014 than get Jameis Winston in 2015. Or are we going to trade our picks for Adrian Peterson now?:)

Hopefully, if we do get Winston, I hope he doesn't all of the sudden play like Tahj Boyd did last night.

lol no.. More like Casey Pachall or some other lucky UDFA.

Seriously though.. Kid is gonna be the 1st overall pick.. Team is too good to be that bad anytime in the next 3 or 4 years and to trade for it would require a team who is somehow terrible but has good QB play coupled with giving up at least 3 1st rounders...

how do you know the team will be too good 3 years from now?

3 years ago could anyone have predicted that the giants would be on their way to a top 5 pick in 2014?

Goodness, I hope not. That would mean I will have to suffer through a one or two win season. I'd much rather have five more season of perennial appearances by the Cowboys, maybe with a Superbowl or two in there. But other, other fans are more concerned with 19 year olds.

He'll be the #1 pick in the 2015 Draft. It will take incredible tanking to get him

this, short of tanking or giving up a plethora of picks (ala rgknee) I don't see us being able to get close to where he will be picked

Which is fine, but it would be in our best interest to at least start thinking about the future. Romo is playing at a high level, but he's not getting any younger.

People are talking about restructuring Romo both in 2014 and 2015.

If both restructures occurred, his cap number would be $20.8M and cutting him would result in $31M in dead money.

2017 Cap Number: $24M with $19M in dead money if cut.

2018 Cap Number: $26M with $9M in dead money if cut.

Winston is gonna be in the 2017 draft or 2016 if he declares early? Doubtful Dallas would be bad enough to even have the pick on their own so they'd have to bundle up for the pick. On top of that they'd have to take the best case scenario that he stays all 4 years so they'd only have to deal with $19M in dead money?

Good luck.

You're right about the money, but if we're talking 2016 or 2017, there's no way to know what our draft position will be. That's just way too far out. We could be playing well or we could be stinking up the place by then or somewhere in between. There's simply no way to predict that.

We'll be drafting a QB this year or next.

We've already had draft this year. If they do draft a QB next year, it won't be a high draft pick, those high draft picks will be to fill more pressing needs, like DLine, Safety LB, OT ect.
