James Harrison won’t let his sons accept participation trophies

What's crazy to me is the graduation ceremonies they have. Pass 4th grade? Graduation ceremony. Pass kindergarten? Graduation ceremony. Get certified to operate the ferris wheel at the county fair? Graduation ceremony.

Another thing...kids rarely say 'please' when they want something. If you want to now how they get a sense of entitlement, not saying please when want something would be a good start.

They celebrate everything...

When I was a kid, if you dated someone you maybe celebrated 6 month but surely 1 year. My kids have to celebrate a 1 month, 2 month, 3 month... etc...

It sux when you are out with the family and your kid tells you they need to get home because they are celebrating their two month anniversary... and it doesn't matter what night. They won't wait for the weekend to celebrate, it has to be that day...

I think a lot of the Graduation stuff is just about money.

THAT is why I can't get on board with being happy to make it to the Super Bowl and losing.

Yuk!

for those of us old enough to remember nothing's worse than watching the Cowboys lose a Super Bowl. I can't even imagine being a Bills' fan and seeing them lose 4 straight. damn

I only really experienced the Super Bowl wins of the 90s
One of which, SBXXX, I was in and out of cold sweats
The 3rd NFC title game vs 9ers that we spotted them 21 pts.

The Bills.... Ooffaa... It forces fans to justify and rationalize the good about it. Yuk! sorry! Lol
No thanks.

Everybody's a winner, you're a winner, he's a winner .....we're all winners!!! Yay

That's our current generation right there folks. Soft as Charmin as Kobe Bryant says.

That's nothing new.

Depends what you call new. I didn't have any graduation ceremony until I graduated high school. Never even heard of all of these graduation ceremonies until about 5 years ago.

you live under a rock? We had 5th grade grad ceremony (elementary) 1973. Junior high 1976. We certainly weren't the only school. All my kids (different school districts) have over the last 25 years. Like I said this is nothing new, not even close.

Just depends on the school district...

I swear to you we had NONE of that growing up in NY. Just didn't exist. Never even heard of it. You just had senior graduation and that was it. School's done? Okay, we're moving on to summer.

I posted the graduation ceremony question to my friends on FB and so far, none of them recall any graduation ceremony outside of senior graduation.

I will say that we did have Regents in NY which is a state issue exam. You had to pass the final exam in order to move up to the next grade (regardless of how you did during the year) and that was pretty much at the last week of the school year, so they didn't really have time for all of these graduation ceremonies. Then again, Regents really didn't start until 9th grade either.

Also, I had never heard of somebody using a 'switch' to beat their kids and their parents making their child get the 'switch' until I was talking about it with a co-worker of mine about 5 years ago.

my father said our grandfather would make them get their own switch and if they tried to get a small one they got it even worse. Have heard that from a few others in my generation about their fathers and grand fathers.

I got that whoopin' before from my grandma. Whipping me with the inadequate switch while leading me out to cut another one... God forbid if it was from the peach tree, lol...

We always politely accepted participation trophies, but we never kept them or made a deal about them, either.

I'm with you. I think folks that hand them out have good intentions, so I wouldn't make it an issue. That said, they all go in a box somewhere and life goes on.
