Huh? He had 23 catches for 225 yards and one touchdown in his last season with the Cardinals. He was a PLAN B free agent, which meant the Cardinals considered him at the bottom of their roster. They could have protected him and kept him. They didn't want him.

The year before that he had 38 for 569 and four TDs. With a 15.0 yard average. I was in Phoenix at the time, and he was a good player. He split time in AZ with a player named Robert Awalt. The Cardinals couldn't decide what to do with either of them, and inexplicably exposed them both. They both ended up on the Dallas roster in 1990/91. Just because the Cardinals didn't want him, doesn't mean he wasn't good.

I guess your definition of a "heck of a player" is different from mine. Novacek in Arizona/St. Louis was never anything close to a Pro Bowl tight end, which he became with the Cowboys.

Leonard Davis, on the other hand, has been a Pro Bowl alternate for the past two seasons (putting him among the top five offensive tackles in the NFC, according to the coaches and players). Does that qualify him as a "heck of a player"?

Ahh, I'd have to disagree with you. I watch the NFL Network all the time and listen to him often. He does a very good job and makes alot of sense. I like his work alot...

I think you guys are getting ahead of yourselves. If you take off your homer goggles, Colombo is a serviceable to average RT one year removed from the scrap heap. Don't get me wrong, I loved what he did last year but being an upgrade over Pettiti and the problems we've had at RT for so long probably made him look better than he was. He is far from a dominant tackle. On paper, Davis looks like he could be a very good guard. He hasn't been dominant yet in his career either.

I hope you're right but it sounds like a lot of emotion talking to me.

Colombo played very well last season and with a another TC under his belt I think he will be even better. No, he wasn't dominant last year but he could be this year. Its called making progress. As for BIG Davis, he was a very good OG his first 3yrs in the league until Denny Green decided to make him a OT. I think Davis and Colombo can be very dominant side by side. They are two BIG STRONG men. Thats not looking thru homer glasses, thats just being optimistic about the potential we have on our Oline... Its very possible!!!

I'm very comfortable disagreeing with you. Novacek was a really good player with the Cardinals. His statistics support that to an extent, and his own opinion of his abilities, but primarily I'll rely on my own opinion watching him play. You know as well as I do that stats don't tell a complete story, especially with a player sharing time on a perennially bad team.

Can we please stop pretending that the opinion of the Arizona Cardinals brain trust is the basis for determining who can play in the NFL? Was it magic that he's all of a sudden a great player when he gets to Dallas? Because that's AWESOME!

I'll ask one question and then let it drop, since this is basically a good thread about L Davis. Did you ever watch Novacek when he was at Arizona to decide he was at or below average?

There's also no doubt that the Cardinals have historically been an awful franchise.

I very much like the risk/reward equation here.

Big coming to the Cowboys doesn't automatically mean rejuvenation. He is what he is. A very talented yet underachieving player who needs to focus. He was paid well in AZ now he's paid even nicer in Dallas. He better damn well earn it. Feels like just yesterday that his false starts were losing games for us. I wish him and you guys well though.

Yes, I did watch Noveacek with the Cards and I thought he was ok. His numbers weren't all that but thats my point. Arizona is no place to judge if a player can play or not... Thats what I was saying. Reread my post...

Oh, I agree with your point re: AZ. This was just an aside to say that it was pretty obvious Novacek was a good player before they let him go. Bigg Davis might very well be in that same boat. He's a bigger risk, obviously, with so much money attached to him, but he could end up a really good player for us.
