Jared Allen can't hold a candle to DeMarcus Ware on his worst day.

He still had 11.5 sks, 6 passes defensed, and 2 forced fumbles. (most importantly started all 16 games)

But given his production vs the number of snaps as compared to other 4-3 defensive ends... He wasn't as productive.

He isn't a slug, but he's not anywhere close to being a top 10 DE either.

There is no such player. I think they should only invest in younger free agents with an eye toward the future. Jerry can just stop with the ideal that this team is built to win now. That ideal is BS now and it was BS when he started saying it.

I don't think Ware had a decent game this year. Allen has always been a notch below Ware, but at this point of their careers, Allen is the better player because of injuries if nothing else.

There's a place for older vets even on teams that aren't likely to win now. The right vet or two might have put us in the playoffs the last few years. That alone would be worth the signing.

Older vets need to be at the right price, but a guy like Brian Waters is a pretty good risk when signed selectively.

Point is, you can make your team better with little risk with the right older vet. Whether Jared Allen is one of those players or not, even if you're more than a player away, you have to look at all your options.

I don't get this. Dallas in 1992 set the precedent in winning with youth. And adding a leadership piece in a guy like Haley. Seattle just won with total youth and Carroll said Jimmy Johnson's model influenced how he approached building the team. Why the hell are we trying to bandage this team with guys at the tail end of their careers?

Totally agree. It amazes how much we have distanced ourselves from the philosophies of the 90s and have turned into a laughing stock of the NFL. Yet teams like Seattle follow that blueprint which brought us those championships in the 90s.

If Garrett was a real coach and a genius he'll go back to what worked in the past. Unfortunately, his not a real coach and he certainly ain't no genius.

I agree with your point. I think it has to be the right situation for it to offer value. I don't think the Cowboys are close enough to being a Super Bowl contender to add these older players unless it is a stop-gap player to fill in for injuries. I think they should be looking for young free agents with an eye toward the future. IMO, a major youth movement is needed and older players need to be phased out.
