With free agency coming, Everybody keeps bringing up Henry Melton, Julus Peppers, etc...
But why doesnt anybody bring up Jared Allen. Will he be expensive?
Release Demarcus Ware, free up approximately $7 - $8 million and we will be at about $10 million under the cap.
Then use that money to sign Melton and Allen, and if there is anything leftover cap wise,
sign a free safety.
Then target a DL/OL in the first round of the draft.
OL/DL in the second, and then more defense the rest of the draft.

starting DL would be (Melton, Allen, draft, draft, and maybe even spencer if he is healthy and cheap)

A one year contract if the price is right is fine. Problem with that is he will get more money and be a contributor elsewhere. And he will likely go to a SB contender since he'd probably rather win the SB than get more money. Maybe.

I don't get this. Dallas in 1992 set the precedent in winning with youth. And adding a leadership piece in a guy like Haley. Seattle just won with total youth and Carroll said Jimmy Johnson's model influenced how he approached building the team. Why the hell are we trying to bandage this team with guys at the tail end of their careers?

It's acceptable to lose for a year if your infusing your team with youth. It's unacceptable to lose via trying to bandage wounds and thinking your one player away. If your not going Ware because of Cowboy loyalty and you aren't worried about injury, then there is no way you go any of these other aging veterans. You start afresh.

If it was still about winning.

When Ware moves on he will probably have a better Sack Total than Melton and Allen combined.

Cowboys are a young team, they still need quality not over expensive vets. Allen's motor is non stop those are the guys needed. Not saying to get Allen but get those type of players.

The Glover, Kosiers of the world that are hard workers with strong leadership are needed on this team.

There's still a role on any team for older role players. They just have to come at the right price and deal structure. If we release Ware, I can see where we'd have a place for him for a season or two.

Allen will likely get 6M to 8M and probably more than 1 year.

It would be best to get younger (Allen is 32), but I had to choose between Ware at 12.25M or Allen at 8M, I would go with Allen. He has been healthier, has more sacks in the past few years and if a legit 4-3 DE with no questions about being better as a 3-4 OLB.

Everybody is talking about age and how we want to go younger.
I totally agree with that, but looking at our track record at drafts, and the fact that the Cowboys always sign FA's we all know that isnt going to happen. So there is no need to think it isnt going to happen
Also, it doesnt really hurt to have a veteran on the line.
He hasnt been hurt and is still fairly productive.
Its obvious the Cowboys are going to sign somebody in addition to who we draft.
Knowing that its going to happen, who would you rather have?
Right now they are trying to figure something out with Hatcher and resign him.
Both Hatcher and Jared Allen will be 32 when the season starts.
Id rather pay Allen, than resign Hatcher who has really only had one "big" year.
