Garrett finally convinced Jerry to stop his fascination with shiny toys and focus on building the offensive line and defensive front seven.
For that, I really appreciated the guy.
Before Garrett, we drafted early the likes of Felix Jones, Mike Jenkins, Jason Williams, Martellus Bennett....while too often ignoring the offensive line. Remember before Parcells, when we drafted Dwayne Goodrich, Tony Dixon, Quincy Carter, Roy Williams, Terrance Williams, Antonio Bryant, Derek Ross.......yuck.
When Garrett took over, we got Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick, Zack Martin, Demarcus Lawrence.....and the year we were in line to get Fletcher Cox, Jerry got excited and jumped up high to take Morris Claiborne.
Garrett did a lot of good by circumnavigating Jerry about as well as he could.
Jerry asked Jason specifically if he wanted Felix Jones and he said yes, while Wade wanted Chris Johnson. Jason Garrett couldn’t field a running game to save his life. Jerry leveraged a draft for Roy Williams to help Garrett’s stagnating offense. In 2012, Garrett with his brother was trying to force feed Kevim Ogletree, their pet project into the lineup.
The reason why Dallas traded for Morris Claiborne is because of our DB play and to generate TOs, because Garrett lackeys kept blaming the defense. This forum used to always trash out DB play. And most people on this forum, which was general pro Garrett then, loved it
After that year specifically, Garrett blamed Rob Ryan for his failures on offense, saying the defense didn’t give him enough opportunities. That 2012 offensive performance was the worst and it was a laughing stock in actuality.
And at least Rob Ryan was afforded the excuse of Ratliff playing only 6 games after coming off a 16 game season.
And they then brought in Kiffen and the Garrett lackeys were then telling us how this was a brilliant move and the reason was because of Garrett’s ‘connection’ to Kiffen, when in actuality it was Lacewell. They also switched back to a 4-3.
If anything, the changes that people claim were part of Jason’s influence, were Jerry learning from the experience of the incompetence of the Garrett era. It took Callahan falling into our lap to start to strip Garrett of influence. It took Romo’s 2014 season with Linehan to realize the significance of the run game, but they thought that they could get the same value with the OL with any RB. After 2015, Jerry realized that wasn’t the case, so they got Zeke. Lael Collins basically CHOSE to sign with Dallas after being undrafted for his issues.
If it wad anybody other than Garrett, Jerry round have fired him long ago.
