Jason Garrett: Jaylon Smith will 'absolutely' play in preseason

Jaylon Smith is coming.

Speaking from Oxnard, CA as the Dallas Cowboys prepare for their 10th practice of training camp, head coach Jason Garrett is firm in that the redshirt linebacker will definitely hit the field at some point in August. The team is still being very cautious with their 34th overall pick, sitting him in the Hall of Fame game to open the preseason.

They've yet to declare if he'll see time this Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams, but aren't denying he'll be on an NFL near you soon enough.

"Absolutely," said Garrett definitively when asked to weigh in on the probability, via Mike Leslie of WFAA.

Few are champing at the bit harder than quarterback Dak Prescott, who spoke on just how elated he is at the thought of Smith joining them on the gridiron. The 2016 NFL Rookie of the Year took to the podium to speak on everything from Justin Timberlake's performance at Jerry Jones' Hall of Fame bonanza to legendary quarterback Roger Staubach, but what he said about the redshirt linebacker out of Notre Dame was the most telling of all.

Simply put, Prescott can't wait to see what Smith can do in a game -- seeing as he's routinely dominated in practice thus far.

No surprise to me based on those short clips we see from people posting on Twitter.

He is really moving around well.

It's hard to tell but he looks quicker than everyone else but it could just be the camera angle so we won't know how good he can be this year until we see him in pre-season.

I think the boys are being way too conservative by not letting him play at all in the next game. You can start him off with say 10 plays; then next game 15; next game 20, etc.

More great news regarding Jaylon Smith. If he and Uncle Rico can make significant contributions on the field this year the already legendary 2016 draft could become biblical.
It has potential to be okay at some point....

What's it going to be then, eh?

Gotta let him loose...... it is now or never mentally

And more of the "now".

If he is good to go, he needs as much live action as he can get.

Regardless, he really is still a rookie. He will see things like every other rookie has.

He may be a great player and extreme talent.

But the speed of the NFL is something every rookie has to deal with. He needs exposure and the coaches need to see how he is handling the uptick in game speed.

The worst thing to do with him is be ultra conservative and have him trot out there for a series or two in the dress rehearsal game.

huh? It's now, or never? Already? Or were you being slick, making us involuntarily think about Elvis Presley?

It worked, if the latter was the motivation... I'm listening now!

He has to be told "you are 100%.....go out and there and get it"

Half -speed means out of game shape and more injuries

It's like NASCAR after a huge wreck

You have to get right back into the car and can't let the doubt seep in....... that is what I learned from Days of Thunder with Cole Trickle

It's been 19 months for Jaylon

I love that we debate the benefits of getting an extra 10 preseason plays in in terms of developing a MLB early in his career. Like, if he were to log 60 plays in the preseason instead of 75 it might transform his season. Looking back in January, we'll be really glad he got those 5 extra snaps against the Rams.

What's really going on is we just want to see him play, sooner rather than later.

Thank you. I see this too. This guy is just barely getting back to normal and he's still not there yet.
I get it, peeps want to see results from their emotional investment, but come on. This guy will see the field when he sees the field. And even then, until the docs say he's full bore- he should not be treated like a normal player.

He's pretty much been on or slightly ahead of schedule with his recovery. We're pretty lucky he's playing as well as he is.

This guy coming back and being a game changer in a best-case-scenario can transform the defense. As far as I'm concerned, they can take as much time as they like until they're sure he's ready.
