Jason Garrett shows he's no puppet with Ezekiel Elliott call

Head coach Jason Garrett pulled a "Jerry Jones" on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
The much-maligned Garrett has taken plenty of flak from both fans and media, being labeled a "puppet" coach who never stands up for himself when it's time to. This is a disgustingly inaccurate narrative, as Garrett's footprint can be found throughout the current personnel of the Cowboys. As a reminder he doesn't play Pinocchio to Jones' Geppetto, he made an alternate call on Ezekiel Elliot this week, saying the rookie running back will play in Game 3 against the Seattle Seahawks.

Please make this stupidity stop. Sometimes people aren't completely on the same page, and when you have mics in their faces, they say different things. It's not the end of the world. It doesn't make either person a puppet of the other person. It's not a sign of anything. It's just the case that they weren't sure about Elliott playing, and then they were, and Jerry and Jason hadn't coordinated their thinking in between the interviews.

It's a rookie RB in a meaningless preseason game. There's no internal power struggle to read into here. He'll play his 8-12 plays, and that will be that. The stupid manufactured drama that follows this team around because people try to create stories that don't exist is just too much sometimes.

Jerry has no business doing interviews about who will play of who won't. Garrett and his coaching staff are paid well to make those decisions. Jerry needs to STHU and get out of the way.....

What would HELP....is if the Owner/GM....would deflect questions to the person who SHOULD be answering them.

Media: Hey Jerry do you think we will see Elliot Thursday night?

Jerry: You are asking the wrong guy....ask Coach Garrett.

This is simple and the way a PROPERLY run NFL organization should be run. It's not that hard!

Did people see the actual quote from Jerry?

To me it is simply him saying what he has seen in practice and camp was enough for him to not regret the pick or change his opinion of Zeke's ceiling.

Naturally, everyone ran with that meaning no Zeke on Thursday even though that's ALWAYS been the plan.

While I agree completely with that, it's like saying that gravity has no business bringing everybody down all the time. It may be right, but good luck convincing it to change.

Jerry's going to stick his big ego into everything relating to this team until he dies. He's going to open his mouth and say a lot of nonsensical things. He's going to say some things that hurt the team and hurt his staff from time to time. That's just the way it is and the way it's going to be no matter who coaches here. And, really, it's his prerogative. If I owned the DC, I'd look at the same way. Anybody who didn't like it could kiss my Snyder. It's just tedious for us fans who have to put up with it.

That said, Jerry's not without his pluses, too.

The GM is the coach's boss. Personnel decisions are ultimately on the GM. Why is that so hard to understand for some people? The coach may have some input but it's the GMs call. As long as the GM stays out of X and O's and play calling, then there is no "puppet".

It's idiotic but oh so typical of Dallas media coverage of the Cowboys.

Personnel acquisition is on the GM. Who sits and who plays is the coach's call.

I agree with you. Even when it comes to personnel it is a group effort not Jerry alone others like BP have stated the same thing. Jerry is the deciding voice once all views are given and there is no consensus. Heck Jerry seemed to want Manziel but others within the organization were not as sold on him as Jerry. In the end Jerry took the advice and we passed on him.
By no means does this make Jerry less responsible in terms of the outcome of a season he is the GM and whatever moves that are made his is the final say.

When it comes to on the field Jerry himself has stated many time over the years that falls to the HC

When it has to do with injury, no it's not. The GM has to protect team assets based on information he recieves from the team doctors and trainers. Coaches may have some input. Outside of that, yes it's all the coach decision because that goes into the area of strategy.

I think if owned the DC, I'd be more inclined to look at the post Jimmy years, and the more successful teams in the NFL, and try to hire the best people to run my team and then get the hell out of the way. But I know you're right about Jerry. His ego won't let him do that.....
