can we have him coach the TE 1st. i’d like to see what he can do with all this so called talent. if he can do something with that sure let’s see what he can do calling plays.

Yes, that'd be perfectly fine with me to have him start as a TE coach (ideally with Detroit to study under Campbell).

So, firstly, below is his record as a HS coach since taking over in 2021.

https://www.nfl.com/news/11-time-cowboys-pro-bowl-te-jason-witten-coaches-high-school-team-to-state-title#:~:text=Liberty Christian is a kindergarten,26-10 in three seasons.

I think Jason Witten is an intriguing option. Based on a previous thread about Jerry talking about Witten as a potential NFL coach. He's got a good record as a coach in high school. What if we had him as OC?

I think Vrabel, Ben Johnson, or Glenn at HC and Witten at OC would be intriguing options. I, for one, would be intrigued to see it. I think Vrabel at HC, Witten (who knows Dak) at OC, and Bones at ST would be a fascinating coaching room. I could see that room developing a physical team. I would sign up for that actually.
what qualifications does he have as NFL OC? why? didn't we already do this with Garrett who had all of two years of NFL positional coaching experience? how did that turn out.
we tried that with Moore and it was the same. they both learned on the job at cowboys expense.
NFL is not Madden 24 for people to just come up with fantasy game plans and plays.
it takes time to learn to be an NFL Coordinator. you have to take your lumps to learn and those two took their lumps in early years. Witten needs proper coaching training, cutting his teeth before becoming an OC in the NFL. else we would be in for another few years of learning on the job.

now, Jerry might think, hey he is going to be cheap. he is a well liked cowboy, so it will get some headlines and we will live through the disaster like we did before. cha ching

Witten would be a peach no doubt.

Last seen around the Star kissing Romos' behind to preserve his playing time before turning on him in Romos' last season.

He knows how to play it up when necessary, no wonder Jerry thinks highly of him.

Okay, I should have clarified this in my OP. Not necessarily immediately as an OC, but id like for him to start as a TE coach and become an OC and eventually HC.

Whoa!

Slow down. Let's try him as an intern, assisting the TE's coach. Isn't that typically the starting point?

Do you think Dan Campbel walked in as an OC?

Dan Campbell started as an intern in 2010 for the Dolphins, promoted to TE coach in 2011. In 2015 the HC, Joe Philbin, was fired and Campbell was made the interim HC, although he didn't get the job permanently.

In 2016, Sean Payton hired him as the TE coach and assistant HC. In 2021 he became the Lions HC.
Jason Witten is not coming in as an intern.

Rather have Romo for OC since we’re talking ex players with zero coaching experience but I don’t condone either one. A resume is important. Work your way up the ladder, preferably in multiple situations and come from a legit tree. That’s what this team should be looking for.

I mean, we don't exactly have a great one now. I could see Jason Witten having at least a good mindset that he can instill. Not to mention he learned how to play tight end in the NFL from Dan Campbell his first few years. I think he could be a good OC for us. Gotta start him somewhere, and I actually like the idea of him calling plays.
then let Witten prove himself first as a TE coach first,... even Dan Campbell was longtime TE coach before he eventually
emerged as a HC candidate.

Me: I'd much rather go with a proven, productive OC design and play caller, before thinking of handing the main big shots
over to a novice OC who has yet to be any kind of position coach at the NFL level.

We are in way to much of a monster mess to be doing that , just becuz he was once a popularity player.

Yeah, I'd be happy with him starting as a TE coach. I think he should actually start in Detroit as a TE coach under Campbell for a few years.

I sure wish we, as a fan base, would get over this infatuation with hiring coaches who have no real experience to come coach the premier franchise on Earth just because they once played here.

If Witten goes through a normal career arc where he coaches HS, does some college work as a position coach, coordinator, HC, then makes his way to position coaching in the NFL and proves himself... THEN he can be talked about as being a coach here.

Some of you guys must miss the Garrett days.

Okay, not immediately, but I'd love it if he could get some years of experience with Campbell as a TE coach and then, if he's good at it, come over as OC.

I do not think most fans realize how hard it is to be a successful HC or coordinator in the NFL. Jason Witten never having coached above the HS level is a huge liability in terms of being ready for the NFL.

I remember the discussion a few years back about Tony Romo making a great OC even though he too has had zero coaching experience at the NFL level. It would be a disaster.

The truth is, running an NFL offense is extremely complicated. Schemes and play design at this level are exponentially more difficult than what it appears to people like us just watching on the couch. Just because a retired individual player was once great does not mean that player would make a great coach.

No. No. No. Just b/c you played doesn't mean you have the skill to design and execute an offense,. Witten is a HOF player but that in no way qualifies him for the job nor does his High School experience. He needs to get on staff as an assistant to an OC. Based on his MNF showing, I'm not sure he has the grey matter required for the job. Even when he was a player, he was the "lead by example" type and never the guy who did a lot of talking or motivated/ got others fired up. Unless he has completely morphed and transferred into a new person, I don't see it. He's no Dan Campbell.

Like I said, exactly what you said. He invented the flex.
Spell 4-3. Go read a Dallas Cowboys history book. Stop drinking the Jerry Dumbo GM Jones Kool Aid. If Landry did not invent the 4-3 defense tell Dallas Cowboy fans who did?
