If left up to some posters here, Witten would be inactive or riding the bench in favor of Escobar, Dunbar or Williams. Whitten is old and slow, don't you see.

Wasted talent, thanks Jerry for never hiring a real head coach since the departure of the man that drafted this future Hall of Famer

I don't see what any of this has to do with Michael Sam.

Sam will get 30 sacks against SF which will give the offense more opportunities for Witten to get 260+ yards he needs to surpass Sharpe.

Dude. Get Witt it.

He is old and slower, but still crafty... Lol

He is still Tony's trusted safety net.

I don't care if he gets 461, Witten is not a HOF player.

In fact he along with : Can't win any big games Tony" are the definitions of "compilers"

I'd take Jay Novacek over Witten twice on Sunday.

Jason Witten would have fit in just fine on the early 90s Cowboys. That offense probably would have been even better with him instead of Novacek. I like Jay, but he is a class below Jason. It isn't even close. Witten holds the record for most receptions in a single season by a tight end. That isn't compiling. That is setting a high standard.

He was always slow. His game is not speed dependent.

This time last year a lot were calling for him to be cut.

Witten is going to have a lot harder time making it to the hall of fame than people think. Given the type of TE play today, his numbers probably will be eclipsed soon.

Soon? Doubtful. Maybe eventually. It will still require a player to play many games over many seasons. I saw early prognostications that Rob Gronkowski and Jermichael Finley would shatter the tight end records. Nowadays Gronk can't stay on the field and Finley is basically retired. Jimmy Graham, a self-described wide receive is off to a good start in his career, but he has a long way to go. I will wait a few more years to see if he can approach Witten's numbers. I doubt anyone playing in the NFL right now including Witten passes the numbers Tony Gonzalez put up during his long and productive career.

I almost wanted to 'like' this post just for the sheer hilarity. Thanks for the laugh.

Ten tight ends had over 700 yards receiving last year. Witten will have to be retired for 5 years to be eligible for the hall of fame.

His lack of touchdowns will seriously hurt his chances.

He definitely won't be a first ballot guy, and at this point I would be surprised if he got in.

I think he does get in. Of this guys how many will do it with any continuity maybe 1 or 2, maybe. I agree though he won't be a first ballot Tony G will be, no other TE will get that honor now.

And of those 10, I doubt very few of them maintain that type of production for a long period of time. Some of them already haven't. Gonzalez was one of those guys and he is the standard setter. Gates is another and he is a HoFer in my book. Witten was also one of those 10. Greg Olsen and Vernon Davis were on that list and both are very far behind Witten, Neither guy has strung together consistent big number years over their careers. They won't catch Sharpe, Gates, Witten and especially Gonzalez. The same can be said about Martellus Bennett. His best year isn't as good as Witten's average season.

At this point it would be tough for him to get in, but he also isn't done playing. He will put up some more numbers. By the time he retires and sits out the required 5 years I doubt there are many tight ends that will catch his production. Maybe one or two, but not a whole bunch. He will get in. Maybe not first ballot, but I'm positive he will be in the Hall of Fame.

If Jason Witten makes the HoF then he will become the first Dallas Cowboy that goes in without a Super Bowl win.

I think you guys are short changing the hall of fame...

Only 8 tight ends have been inducted in the modern era. Usually only a few tight ends from a generation go in.

Mike Ditka 1961-1972
John Mackey 1963-1972
Jackie Smith 1963-1978
Charlie Sanders 1968-1977

Dave Casper 1974-1984
Ozzie Newsome 1978-1990
Kellen Winslow 1979-1987

Shannon Sharpe 1990-2003

By the time it comes to induct Witten, a lot of guys are going to be coming up behind him with similar numbers or better projected numbers. His lack of touchdowns versus most tight ends in this range will be a problem for him. Vernon Davis has more TDs than Witten, as does Antonio Gates and Dallas Clark.
