Tony G is almost untouchable. Maybe more-so than Emmitt's record.

Assuming this is Gonzalez's last year, Witten will have to play for an additional 6 years. Not completely out of the realm of possibilities, but it'll be tough no doubt.

One thing to note is that Gonzalez is playing on his second team. So we'll certainly see how things play out for Witten.

If I remember correctly, Adamjt has said that Witten is farther along in terms of receptions per age than gonzo was, however AP and all other RBs are way behind Emmitt in terms of yards per age. though i could be mistaken

Not only 6 more years he would have to do it with the type of production he puts up now without slowing down.... I think that's unlikely. Reguardless he is in the HOF and will get within a coup,e hundred catches

Heres a nice article comparing Witten, Gonzalez and Jerry Rice and projecting their numbers. Not that they'll catch Rice but it's an age comparison. The guy is very similar to Rice as far as being a pro that shows up ready to work.

http://www.footballperspective.com/record-watch-can-jason-witten-catch-jerry-rice/

The last paragraph:
Witten has a nearly 200-catch lead on Rice through age thirty. If we assume Witten can stay healthy in each of the next five years, he’ll get an even bigger buffer when he hits age 35. If we give Witten 351 catches over the next five years, he’ll be at 1157, giving him a 100-catch lead on Rice. Based on what Rice did after age 35, that’s not going to be anywhere near enough. If Witten wants a realistic shot, he’s going to need to keep pumping out 90-100 catch seasons for the next four years, at least. In any event, Witten will be able to keep this dream up for awhile: he needs just 38 catches in 2013 to end the year with the most receptions of any player through age thirty-one.

I doubt that. With the way the league has gone to a very pass heavy league it just seems a lot more likely that a TE is going to have a chance of catching Tony G a lot more easily than a runningback will to catch Emmitt.

Especially with how athletic and fast TE's seem to be getting. Couple all that with the fact that most teams use more than one RB and there really aren't a lot of workhorse backs anymore I'd say that Emmitt can rest pretty easily that his record will be his for a long time.

I'm not so sure that Tony G will be able to say that.

I like how Witten's reception graph has been constantly going up.

idk, if you think about guys like Jimmy Graham, and the overall evolution of the TE position, I think its more likely that someone catches Tony than it is Emmitt.

The only reason this might be true is Adrian Peterson. And I'm not sure AD will last long enough to really do this. But it's not out of the realm of possibility. We've had this discussion in other threads before. I don't think AD catches Emmitt in the end. But he's the most likely candidate to do so. A few years ago some probably thought LT was a lock to at least get close to the record.

Witten has 814 catches through one game at age 31. Gonzalez had 726.

Emmitt had 10,229 yards through one game at age 28. Peterson has 8,942.

Witten has a much better chance of passing Gonzalez than Peterson does of passing Emmitt.

Adam dispelled that argument too.

I had no doubts LT wasn't going to catch Emmitt. I could see his deterioration even in San Diego.

And while AP is a beast, am I the only one who noticed that even in his break-away run Sunday, he seemed a bit slow? He looked like he was in full stride but wasn't running as fast. I wonder if anyone else noticed that or maybe I'm just seeing things.

Hold up. Are those numbers in the link even accurate?

1500 receptions for Gonzalez? When I saw that compared to where everyone else is, I didn't think there was any way a TE could catch him but that's nowhere near correct.

I didn't even think of how ridiculous that number is for even a WR but 1500 receptions for Tony G?

haha.

Witten, soon to be the tight end with the 2nd most career receptions in NFL history..............drafted in the third round.

I have a hard time thinking of any greater 3rd-round pick in NFL history.

They gave him more catches than even Rice. Must be hosted on the official site of Tony G.

Not sure how to remove that link from my original thread. Maybe one of the mods would be so nice
