The reason the fan base feels that way is because his self promotion got old. No one wants to see a player celebrating a tackle 7 yards down the field when we are losing by 3 tds. It made him look like the concept of team didn't matter.

This wasn't an isolated thing, he did crap like that regularly.

Personally he might be a fantastic guy, but he could or didn't care to read the temperature of the room. It made him difficult to watch. None of that even goes towards how terrible he was on the field in general, which only amplified everything.
OK.

So he wasn't the best player. And he did things "on the field" that rubbed people the wrong way. I get it. His celebrations and spaz sessions on the field were annoying and the Cowboys were right to cut bait with him (should have sooner IMO).

But the attacks on his character actually show the true character of people here. I honestly don't really care what former Cowboys do off the field. Some have been wildly successful off the field, some have been slugs and losers. It happens. My life isnt tied up in what these guys do after football. So it's downright bizarre that some in this thread had such a visceral reaction to a story of a former Cowboy that has made something of himself off the field and helped others.

Some here should be embarrassed. But they won't be.

Meh dude was trash as a player and I guarantee his is one of the slimiest guys out there. I wouldn't trust him to wash my car. He would figure out a way that it would benefit him more than me.
Hey CWR, case in point right here.

Meh if you guys don't follow the team closely enough to get a sense of what the players are like that is not my problem. Let me guess you would hire Kelvin Joseph to baby sit your kids as well. Ignorance is bliss. Have at it boys.,

I'm not necessarily one to disparage the man post career, but I do understand why people react how they do. He was a frustrating player to watch, that said there is no reason to assassinate his character either.

Let's keep in the context of a fanatic though, and realize we ALL have a bizarre commitment to the uniform. Fandom is not logical by its very definition.

You may be expecting too much. Lol

Kelvin Joseph had a history of being a problem off the field and a pain in the butt in the lockerroom. He was basically asked to leave LSU and then had some issues at UK. He was reportedly kind of lazy and often half assed things.

Smith never had any issues off the field in college or here in the pros. From all accounts, teammates really liked him. He put in a grueling year of rehab to get a completely screwed up knee.

But apparently because he was a spaz on the field, loved to yuck it up for the camera and was generally a goofy guy on the field, you've concluded that he's a real scumball off of it. LOL.

You will rarely meet someone more obsessed with self promotion than J Smooth. His brand and his image is what matters to him. He is a used car salesman. If you do not see it that is OK but that doesn't mean it isn't real.

But we don't really know if it's "real". Nothing you said above means that he's a scumball off the field. So what if his brand and image are important to him. That doesn't mean he's a piece of **** off the field. If anything, if someone is so concerned with his image, why tarnish that with being a douchebag? Guys who are ***** off the field, typically reveal themselves as ***** at some point. To date, has anyone spoken ill of Smith off the field?

Smith isn't the first player that hammed it up for the cameras or wanted the limelight and worried about his image and brand. Were they all scumbags too?

The fact you made a loose comparison to Joseph really undermines your analysis here. The two are nothing alike.

I don't understand the animus towards him. He did the best he could with the injury he had.
He made his money and, truth be told, aint none of yall in his position would be giving money back to Jerry because you didn't pan out with the team.
Do yo thang, Jaylon.

He was a goof ball on the field. He liked to celebrate even after bad/dumb plays. He was caught smiling on the sideline a few times after a dumb mistake or play. He was always talking about his life off the field. He was just weird at times.

Ergo, he's a douchebag off the field per some here.

LOL.

Sometimes, people laugh to cover the fact they're crying inside.
He likely was terribly disappointed in his injury and his career. And he probably heard about it every day via social media.
So instead of acting as if it bothered him - or letting people know it bothered him - he put on a happy face.
Still, that's not cause for animus. Getting your gang to kill someone because he dissed you is cause for animus.
Yep. I went there.

I will always wonder what kind of NFL career he would have had if he wouldn't have got hurt in college.

He had potential HOF kind of ability.
I don't think so, his knowledge of the game was pretty sketchy when he played here. The dude was always a day late and a dollar short when it came to plugging run lanes............

Always seems like there's an ulterior motive to keep the cash flowing, even now. He's been peddling his brand since day 1. That's besides the terrible play and the nauseating celebrations where he constantly looked to be center stage.

Because he was a clown on the field? I don't care about your rah-rah BS about him. Those sob stories work with Jerry Jones.

Also "god given ability" - yeah he was fast, but there is a mental aspect to football and he wasn't exactly the brightest player.
No Need to insult you, your post did a fine job of it

I think the same thing. He was amazing ND. I still think he would have flamed out in the NFL. He lacked toughness and the NFL was never going to allow him to out athlete other players.

Jaylon's career was weird. He took a year to get on the field. After getting juked out of his shorts early he then got better for a couple years culminating in a pro bowl nod. Now I get that doesn't mean he is elite I do think it reasonable that he was better than average. Then he fell of a cliff production wise.

Now, I do think a lot of that is because teams figured out how to scheme him and he couldn't adjust. But I also think that his football IQ was pretty low. I cannot tell you how many times I would be yelling at him to watch for the Y trying to cross behind him as he stared straight ahead. Now he would be trying to mirror the QB but zero instinct as to what was going on. The proverbial blind dog chasing a pork chop.

The contract was abysmal. $24m could have been much better spent.

How about moving it over to the off topic page where it belongs? seems to be in the wrong forum.
