Unless a guy's name is Luke Kuechly I just can't bring myself to spend a first round pick on a LB, its just not that important, or hard to find, of a position. I esp can't spend a mid or high first on a LB, just a waste of a pick when there's so much talent at other, more important positions, available. Sure Smith seems like a really good player, I just as soon get Striker in the third, who seems like a comparable player at a cheaper cost. Drafting as high as we are likely to, we HAVE to get a skill position player, most likely a QB, slight trade back for a RB, or perhaps a CB.

Would be a great addition to our defense.
Base:
Lee-Smith-Hitchens/whoever
Nickel:
Lee-Smith

Looks good on paper.

If we pass on Jack/Smith, I think we still could get a good LB later in the draft though. Lower potential though IMO

At that time, Kuechly was just another prospect. Could be a stud or could bust. We now have the benefit of hindsight on him but at that time, there were some who were weary of him too.

If Smith is the best player on the board at our pick, you take him. It's just that simple.

No way on a LB, if that's the case trade back

Kuechly was a monster and a legit blue chip LB. He had ridiculous production.

The only thing that concerns me at using that high a pick on Jaylon is his lack of forced turnovers. Kuechly averaged 3 picks a year. Jaylon has 1 int in his college career I believe. Shazier didn't have a lot of picks but he forced fumbles.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he was the pick, but that's probably one of the only knocks on him right now. We're obviously interested in a playmaking LB right now. I also think they want to put Lee back at MLB where he was a game changer in the passing game.

I haven't really paid much attention to him to be honest. But after looking up some of his film and scouting reports, I must say that the guy looks like a hell of a player.

Can't say I'd be upset with the pick, depending on who is still on the board and what pick we end up getting.

He reminds me of Patrick Willis.

I haven't seen enough of him to compare him to Shazier, but several reports have reported he's a better prospect.

Not sure i like a LB top 10 unless it's a Kuechly. But we've shown interest in LB's recently.

For a LB to go that high, they better be great in coverage. It's just that simple. Jack is justifiable because thats what he excels at. I don't think Smith is in his league when it comes to that. Would rather draft Jack and figure out the fit later. It's not like Lee is the most durable player so having Jack and Lee is redundant. It becomes more feasible if they actually invest in a real 1T. Then the DL can eat up more blocks and you could probably get away with Jack or Lee as your base Mike and Will backers without losing much in the run defense, if any.

I love Jack and you are right. He has covered in the slot. He is uber athletic. His knee is the only thing that concerns me. Scared of drafting injured players with a top 5 pick.

Lol what are you talking about and what sport are you watching?

Sifting through the trash is more about getting from point A to point B (the ballcarrier) without getting locked up with a lineman. A LB loses that battle every time. The best LBs are the ones that know how NOT to get blocked, and that's all about instincts and play speed.

There are times when you may line up over a TE and are asked to stack him, and that's where being physical with blocks matters. Or when you're asked to take on H/F-Backs. But in our defense that's more the job of our Sam.

It's just a meniscus tear though. He's probably going to be a combine participant so any concerns should be eased when he gets back out there. I'm not going to get worked up about a minor injury like that. According to Kiper, scouts aren't really worried about it either.

ESPN's Mel Kiper ranks UCLA junior LB Myles Jack as the No. 12 overall prospect despite the prospect's knee injury.

Jack's meniscus tear has been met with more or less a yawn in the scouting community; we have not yet read one account (outside of Jim Mora's, of course) of his stock taking a hit. "A gifted athlete, he'll play between 235 and 240 pounds but show off the kind of quickness you'd get from a smaller safety, and that extends to his ability to cover as well," Kiper wrote. "He can attack the backfield and is a physical kid, but he's especially good anticipating and covering ground quickly to make plays across the formation and in coverage. Now officially in the draft, he's a first-rounder on my board as of today." An NFC executive echoed that sentiment via an anonymous quote published by NFL.com yesterday.

I would do cartwheels if we could trade back from 5 and still get a guy like Jaylon Smith in the first, then pick up RB Devontae Booker and a QB or CB in the second round with that extra pick.
