I'm unclear. Did someone say the nerve was firing or that a step that happens before that has taken place?

Holy crap, this is getting me excited. I don't care that he wont be ready for this year. I've been on pin and needles all year waiting to hear something on him playing again. If Smith is a go for the 2017 year, that is 1 more play maker that Dallas has added to the defense, 1 more weakness addressed freeing up potential cap room or draft pick for other area's of need on the D. Plus, Sean Lee and Jaylon Smith at LB is definitely a beautiful picture.

Walk me through the timeline again. If there a point in time where the Cowboys have to make a decision to basically IR him for the rest of the year.

FWIW, count me in with the group that says he's not playing this year, even if somehow is healthy enough to play.

By moving to reserve/NFI, Smith will not be eligible to practice until Oct. 17. They will then have until Nov. 7 for him to begin practice, which would then start another three-week window. By Nov. 28, the Cowboys would have to decide to activate him to the 53-man roster or move him to injured reserve.

Thanks.

So basically if he doesn't practice by Nov 7th, he's done for the year?

He shouldn't. Let him heal and have the entire off season. Worse thing is to rush him back, and have him re-injure and his career be over.

This is how I feel as well. I don't know much about the foot drop issue and I know they say his knee has been fully rehabilitated but it seems that if you can't push off from your foot for 9 months there is no way you are fully ready to go just because you all of the sudden can. I just don't see how your calf muscles could be near what they should be if you can't raise your foot on your own.

Oh yeah? Structurally, the knee is already "healed," it's simply whether the peroneal nerve regenerates to the point that he regains feeling and allows him to move his foot on his own accord. Once that happens, probably just a matter of conditioning the muscles and he's good to go.

Here's a question. Let's say the knee is firing and he's actually cleared to play in mid-November.

Would you then consider moving Lee to MLB and inserting Smith as the WLB? Playing him at WLB might keep him out of more scrums and piles given he's coming off a knee injury. Granted, Lee has his own health issues as well.

From Jeff Sullivan:

From a Cowboys scout about a week ago.

Spagnola

Why would he ever wear a brace? The knee is supposed to be sound and healed, strong...we heard that a long time ago, that this was all about the nerve healing and firing; what the heck does a brace have to do with that?

That's why folks shouldn't get carried away with what Spags is saying. If he's wearing a brace, it's very likely because the foot is not functioning (or at a capacity that he can rely on it). Let him sit out and rehab the year and hopefully make a run at it next year.

I think the brace they're talking about is the same brace he's been wearing in the workout clips. Keeps his foot up.
