Why would he ever wear a brace? The knee is supposed to be sound and healed, strong...we heard that a long time ago, that this was all about the nerve healing and firing; what the heck does a brace have to do with that?

Jaylon has foot drop because of the damage to his peroneall nerve. The brace would help keep his foot up. It's not for his knee.

From what JJ was saying, it seems like they are still waiting on the nerve to "awaken". Guess we're still waiting for regeneration to occur. My guess is that his knee is healed, and the nerve is showing regrowth. I'm guessing he still has the "drop foot".

Possibly but with the latest media reports in this thread saying they have heard some positive things, I wonder if Smith is now getting signs the nerve is starting to fire.

Wouldn't be taking your victory lap just yet. The kid still hasn't played a NFL down. It might still end up being a terrible pick for a 2nd place team. ;)

There are posters who hope for Jaylon Smiths demise as a tribute for their own personal cardboard cut out persona, over the very team they claim to support.

Almost laughable in a very sad way, however as life has its way this clarification defines personal character or rather the lack thereof for everyone here to witness.

When did he say this?

Based on what we were told around the draft, the nerve should have had time to grow the required 6 inches or at least be very close to reaching the muscle by now. If things are going as good as possible, then it's time to start hearing good news. If we don't hear anything about refiring by the end of October, then my optimism will plummet. That doesn't mean he still won't make a full recovery but I will get less and less comfortable as more time goes on.

so when the nerve fires that means it has grown back fully? or does it mean it will start re-growing?

It just seems like they could tell us something on the nerve regeneration , especially considering he's a second round pick that we all have high hopes for

Oh, I have more but I'd prefer to use it helping my 7 year old as I know she'll be able to grasp the concept. Carry on. Sorry to derail the thread.
Thanks teach. I find more often than not people try to be grammar , punctuation and spelling police because their knowledge of the subject being discussed is very low.

Thanks for the laugh. Much needed. There's just so much 'win' here but I need to realize that some people don't appreciate good help. :hammer:

It has to grow and reach the muscle before it will refire. If it doesn't grow to the right spot, he won't regain the normal use of his foot unless there is a surgical option.

your correct. According to surgeons comments after surgery the nerve should have reached muscle around end aug/early sept. I think by thanksgiving if we don't get good news its likely the interior of nerve was damaged to point it won't refire. But everyone is being optimistic and we should too for time being.

the nerve started regrowing months and months ago. Once it reaches the muscle...the hope is that the nerve will send uninterrupted impulses to the muscle. But there is chance the nerve does nothing even after it reaches the muscle. Very serious injury, very risky pick by Jerry but the payoff could be mother load for next 10 years at MLB. I think Broddus says it best when he says only a GM with 100% job security can make that kind of draft pick that early in draft.

River boat Jerry, it is in his blood. High risk high reward of course there is another way, like having player personnel being very very good at their job.

Yep, I have a feeling that recent tweet was a result of some type of feeling coming back to the new nerve. The timing would be spot on and then there is the talk of him playing this year. I doubt it's fully firing but my guess is that he felt something, went to the doctor, and got good news. It's probably not to the point where they want to announce anything but is heading in the right direction. We can hope anyway.

I think what your referring to is increased sensation. Smith has commented for several months that sensation has increased so I would not consider that new development. In my head I can picture Jaylon tweeting picture of his brace on ground and saying game on. Were all hoping but there isn't whole lot of time for this to make turn in good way.
