I didn't like the pick, not because I hated Jaylon Smith but because I thought it was too high for a player who wouldn't contribute for at least a year. I thought we could have selected him in a lower round, maybe in the fourth.
The scenario that the Pats would have taken him was mere speculation. Nevertheless, after I got over the selection, I was on board primarily because his surgeon was on the Cowboys' staff. I felt pretty confident he would bounce back but that it would take a few years.
I personally don't think he was 100 percent last year and this is going to be a "Watch out for this beast now that he's 100 percent" year for J.S. The guy is super fast, packs a wallop and has a non-stop motor. This defense is going to be nasty.
He'll resign with the Cowboys and get all his money. He had ALL the tangible and intangibles and is a super leader with high character too?
The Cowboys would be stoopid to let him go.
P.S., I still think he was drafted too high based on the reasons I articulated above. And I would have said the same if we had drafted Tom Brady in the 2nd. The draft is about perceived ability, talent and value AT THE TIME OF THE DRAFT! It is not an assessment of the player's career value.
