Year before last numbers on Mike "Toast" Jenkins

CN: What was his YPA the year before? He was an alternate to the Pro Bowl, but those selections can be subjective. But he was making interceptions and attacking the ball more. How far did he drop in 2010?

K.C.: In 2009, he was at 5.4 and he had a 50.5% success rate.

CN: That's a really good line.

K.C.: On 99 passes, no less. He was a top-10 corner that year. He was tied for 9th in yards per attempt.

...The vertical yards per attempt... you want to know the big reason he fell apart last year? In 2009 he allowed 3.3 vertical yards per attempt. He had 51 vertical attempts, more than three per game. He was one of the most vertically targeted corners in all of football. He had 40 successful plays, you know 40 incompletions or breakups or picks. Only gives up 167 yards and has a 3.3 yards per vertical attempt average.

He has a 78.4% success rate on vertical passes. You want a headline, and I ran this last year in my fantasy football magazine? Mike Jenkins' vertical numbers in 2009 were virtually identical to Darrelle Revis'.

The Curious Case of Mike Jenkins

I hope we get the 09' version of Jenkins back this year. (And I think we will)

Anyway, article suggesting maybe Jenkins was playing through some 'injury' which kind of makes sense as the guy just went from top 10 to bottom 10 over an off season.

So cheer up. :D

I still say the refs allowed him to play physical (which is his style) on deep routes in 2009 and then suddenly decided they would pick on him last year in 2010 with all the PI calls.

They got nitpicky on him and he started playing scared and gunshy. Any sign of contact from Jenkins and flags flew. Teams figured that out and targeted him more, and he didn't make the play because he was afraid of getting a call.

Tell me half the PI calls on Jenkins last year would have been allowed for Darelle Revis. I think so.

He was a beast in 2009 and in the begining of 2010 remember the texans game

The knock on Jenkins coming out of USF was that he wasn't consistent with his work ethic..He needed a coach that would always push him..he came in and played great and obviously last year he took a step back..considering the scouting report coming out, Wade definitely wasn't the best type of HC for Jenkins...I feel 100% comfortable stating that we will see the 09 Jenkins in 2011...

hes a man to man corner and when we switched to alot more zone is when he struggled. I think its pretty simple.

Nope. Jenkins struggled early in the season when wade was still here, and he was playing man to man the majority of the time.

Jenkins is a man to man corner, but our coverage improved when Pasqualoni switched us into a zone scheme.

It sounds cliche, but I think a lot of it has to do with confidence.

Jenkins lost his confidence early last season; eventually he was just trying to prevent mistakes, rather than make plays.

This is exactly what I'm saying, except I think it was the refs that caused him to lose his confidence.

Definitely! He had that aggressive and almost ball-hawk mentality. It seemed like his overall performance was effected by his confidence level. Not just playing the ball but tackling as well. God forbid the refs allowed the cowboys to make a play!

All of our corners play better man to man. Our defensive backs generally struggle in zone.

We have extremely athletic, fast corners when they are able to play man to man. I'm sure Rob Ryan sees this on film.

He was getting beat like a drum in 1 on 1 that is why they started playing more zone. Game vs Tenn Kenny Britt ate his lunch, Jenkins was getting beat off the line and grabbing the jersey and getting PI and when he didn't Britt would make a big catch. Jenkins is better than that but it was nothing to do with playing zone Jenkins played poorly

I just hope it was a huge case of Sophomore slump coupled with the mess the team was in.

I'm ready to see the '09 Jenkins again!!

Aren't we all! I expect a strong bounce back this year. He was so fun to watch in 09. Whatever the reason for his numbers last year, let's hope it's all behind him

You can't always play man-to-man. There are team out there (Saint, Packers, others) that love to put 3-4 (or 5 in the case of the Packers) WRs on the field at once -- it gets much harder to go man-to-man in this scenario.

So the refs thought he was a great guy and treated him nice one year and then got mad at him and treated him poorly the next?

Honestly if I was a ref there were many times I would have thrown the flag as well on Jenkins. I love the kid but he played bad last season and needs work hard to get back to his 09 play.

Heck he is not the only one I was disappointed in last year, Spencer is another whose play dropped off from the 09 season.

I agree. I honestly don't really remember yeling at the refs on calls against Jenkins, I remember yelling at Jenkins.

It is easy to blame the refs but to make positive strides a player is better off trying to improve himself. Jenkins all to often was beat at the line and I'm not going to blame the ref for that.

Jenkins showed me what he is capable of in 09 and I expect to see that type of play from him.
