Jerry: ”I didn’t know it was going to be this tough”. Why it is this tough

Unfortunately what needs to be done most fans don’t have the energy or will power.

Well, some of us do but apparently there’s more waiting in the wings to fill our voids.
Absolutely nothing is stopping anyone possessing the energy or will power to attempt something except themselves. Then again, blame is baseless for anyone not taking action if a practical strategy cannot be formulated towards seeking an attainable, not probable or wished for but attainable, goal.

For the life of me I cannot comprehend how there is any defense left for Jerry. Mountains of evidence, irrefutable evidence that he's a terrible GM.
Evidence would have made a non-narcissist attempt a different strategy long ago, or example, hiring another general manager.

Here is a better question. Why does all the mountains of evidence painting Jones as a narcissist not convince ALL observers he is a narcissist unwilling to change because of his nature?

30 years. Three decades cannot be explained logically with explanations of "Jerry's greedy!" and "Jerruh's football stupid". It is like Jones' narcissism and people who do not understand the reason why Jones is who he is are opposite sides of the same coin.

Being a fan is sort of powerless.

You are along for the ride.

It's sort of like a marrage.

In the beginning it is all wet and satisfying.

You wonder how you did without it.

You think it is going to go on and on making you happy.

Then things like habits and selfish decisions on both sides sets in and it changes.

After awhile things snowball and you want to change but change is hard and you delay it.

Then it gets worst and one day somebody walks up to you and serves you with divorce papers.

Now you are either upset or happy..depending.

No matter what..you assets are about to be divided.

Your friends are going to take sides and you are either branded as wise or a goat

There is little middle ground.

But you pickup the pieces and find a new mate or you go buy that condo in Florida and play golf.

I have done it all.

But I still like my life and I am still my biggest fan..win or lose.

That's what being a fan of this team is like.

Count on chsnge..

Count on you not being happy at times..

but you understand the process.

The fan defense rests.

Know why they name hurricanes after women?

They come in blowing and wet and leave with your house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So what is the analogy for hurricanes named after men? :muttley:

The salary cap was put in place to stop Jerry from buying a perpetual Cowboys dynasty. Jerry could throw money around, occasionally getting luck and doing things like ripping the Vikings off in the Herschel trade, but once the cap came into place and it became about real management skills, he has consistently failed to rise above a level of mediocrity. Then again, most teams, with the exception of the Patriots, haven't done much better than win an occasional Super Bowl during this time period. This is what the NFL wants for some reason.

Bold> answer is competitive balance. Competitive balance breeds parity. Parity attracts more consumers. More consumers equals more $$$$.

Usually in life many things are always about green backs.

When the salary cap was devised, it was not to prevent a Cowboys dynasty, there were other owners that could buy and sell him. The goal was to guarantee every team would make a profit and that's when the values began to exponentially grow. Any business with a fixed expense line is a valued business.

The owner most prone to build a dynasty was DeBartolo, the only one to get nailed for cap manipulation in the beginning.

IMO it comes down to most fans not really caring enough.

They try and separate the Cowboys from Jerry as Couch Coach has referred to.

The Cowboys are an entertainment entity which in their eyes isn’t a business that is producing a poor product they’d normally snub.

Jerrys like the rich arrogant uncle who won’t shut their mouth at family gatherings. Everyone hates him but he’s family so we must tolerate him or totally stay away.

All paths for change have always started with one individual. Can everyone else be blamed for not seeing the inspiration one person will not initiate himself or herself?

Yes, they can be blamed cumulatively however indirectly it might be much like we would in civic issues in society.

Ignorance might be bliss but not an excuse. Often facts can be spun to present a narrative which isn’t a reflection of reality.

And try and separate the team from the owner is the challenge there because he will not go away. Half the threads in the Fan Form are about him or something that escaped out of his mouth.

But the most amazing thing to me is the level of anger and frustration with a team that won the East and made the final four. No one would know that by taking the temp of the forum. I think the fact that Garrett is still there is the crux of it because there's two ways to go on him. He is either the guy that turned the team from 3-5 or the man that put them at 3-5.

The real frustration is the helplessness that most feel and the hopelessness of the situation. Like other fans in places like DET and NO, they could count on bad seasons bringing about change but nothing, absolutely nothing, will keep the Cowboys from being at or near the top in profit and the ratings. There's not another team like this and we just happen to be fans of it.

Like I said before, the quickest way to happiness with this team is to let go of that "23 years", all it's doing is sustaining the frustration. It also doesn't allow for the fact that there were some damned good years sprinkled in those 23. Not rings but to me the ring's not the thing. 1 happy fanbase, 31 disappointed, don't like those odds. Last season was a damned good season and I have to keep telling myself that.

And Greg, has been our one. The man has been walking around with his pitchfork yelling "let's take the castle" as long as I've known him but the rest of us are not ready to leave the pub.

Yep and why fans need to lower the bar and adjust their expectations. Or you might as well walk away like so many locally have.

This isn’t the same franchise many of us grew up with. And it’s not going to be.

Last year was about as good as it gets this era. I agree Coach.

It is what it is. I helped influenced thousands to walk away from their long time season tickets years ago but was unsuccessful influencing anonymous fans on an Internet however frustrated they were.

But once the new stadium was built , tickets sold, PSL’s committed and sponsors signed. Game over!!

I have waived my white flag like many other local apathetic fans and why we see so many opposing fans at the stadium and faltering local viewership to go along with the critical media which has even become somewhat exhausted and retiring after 30 years.

True

As a matter of fact Jerry led the way promoting the implementation of the Salary Cap. Fixing your labor cost is sound business practice.

It also would allow him the excuse for not using all of resources to field a better team thru free agency while limiting other teams to build and maintain greater dynasties which indirectly would maintain the Parity allowing his ways to remain more competitive.

In a recent interview with Jon Machota, the Cowboys beat writer from the newspaper we cannot mention here, Jerry Jones said one of the more revealingly stupid comments (even for him!) he’s ever said about why his team hasn’t been in a Super Bowl in 23 years:

I got involved (with the Cowboys) to win. I must tell you, I didn’t know it was going to be this tough..... It is just absolutely a stunning thing to me to think of why we’re not there (playing in Super Bowls) with what we commit and what we do to win Super Bowls.”
What is stunning to me is not that the Cowboys haven’t been in a Super Bowl in 23 years. What’s stunning is what is obvious to anyone who pays attention to how pro sports organizations who win consistently run their organization, is somehow not apparent to this 76 year old billionaire.

It’s actually easy to explain why this team hasn’t been to a SB in so long. It’s amazingly simple- in today’s NFL, having a kind hearted owner who also serves as its primary decision maker is inherently detrimental to winning. If you don’t have a steely eyed decision maker who does not allow sentimentality to influence decisions to run the team, you’re behind the 8 ball.

Below are the things most responsible for the last 23 years:

1. Excuses made and accepted at the top of the organization- Remember JJs famous quote calling a loss to Denver in 2013 “a moral victory”. Or excusing his HCs failures after 2015 and 2017 being tied to injuries and suspensions? An organization whose top executive makes and accepts excuses is killing itself. Our HC has 2 wild card wins in 8 seasons and our owner GM dreams of that guy being his “Tom Landry”. It’s delusional.

2. Nepotism and favoritism blinds the organization- when your organization has no one at the top who can question the leader, it’s deadly to success. And when the leader hires his children and favorite friends for sentimental reasons, it makes objectivity very difficult. There is a reason NEPOTISM is illegal in many workplace situations- it doesn’t work well. Who tells Jerry he’s wrong and is hurting this team?

3. A complete lack of real accountability at the top-
Name another pro sports General Manager with 23 years of mediocrity who still has a job. Which NFL Head Coach could still have a job after winning two wild card games in 8 seasons? In fact, the only accountability in the organization is with assist coaches and mid- bottom level players.
So in order to get back to the glory days of the past, this organization just needs do the opposite of the above 3 disasters:
1. Never make nor allow excuses...ever.
2. Stop being sentimental and allowing yourself, family and select friends to have “special privileges” without proving they are capable or without the ability to help us win.
3. Hold people at the top accountable for failure. A lack of results must be dealt with or failure will continue. People in key jobs, like HC, cannot be given special treatment.
I know Jerry probably won’t take proper action to right his failures as a leader but he shouldn’t act surprised when the ship sinks every year either. He needs to look in the mirror. The emperor is naked.
Very good post!!!

Thousands? What did you do, take an ad out in Cowboys Weekly?

The problem with both Jones is, that they think that if they feel a certain thing is tough to accomplish it must be tough. But that isnt the case. It is only tough for people who dont have the talent. Its like with mathematics. The more talent you got for it the less tough it is on you to understand and handle it.

But JJ and his son think that this is a trait of managing a football franchise: That this is tough. Not only tough for them because they lack the needed talent. Being a bit more self reflected would help them alot.

No, the season ticket holders had several meetings. There were a few of us who lobbied everyone to walk away. Jerry even attended a meeting attempting to pursuade us from leaving.

So Jerry figured with parity he could win with a few shrewd moves here and there? It hasnt exactly worked out that way, since he bought Deion for 35 million and won exactly one title with him. Since then, he hasnt even made a conference championship game. The salary cap meant that Jerry no longer had to outbid DeBartolo, but it was also the undoing of his dynasty.
