It has often been stated by many fans that the “bar has been lowered” in Dallas. Perhaps we should clarify that statement a little further.

I believe the more correct statement is “JERRY is the bar in Dallas.” In other words success is simply what Jerry says it is. He doesn’t measure his HC or his team (like other owners) by results like winning or losing in the playoffs. He uses “relevance” as a bar of measurement. He uses his cash flow as a bar. He uses his feelings as a bar. He uses Johnny Walker Blue....but I digress, lol.

One of the unfortunate problems this has created within the culture of the Dallas Cowboys the last 20+ seasons is our owner's stated belief that being “relevant” at season’s end was somehow an accomplishment. Without even winning in the playoffs. If I owned this team, my HC with 8 seasons and 1 playoff win would be shown the door if they don’t make the playoffs OR don't win at least two playoff games. That should be the bar.

Fortunately, this can be remedied with a deep playoff run. Then the bar will speak for itself by the excellence of achievement. I hope the Cowboys are done losing this season. They are capable of a deep run in these playoffs but it must start Sunday.

Jones has kept himself entrenched as general manager for nearly 30 years. He is completely 100% confident he is the best person to run football operations for the Dallas Cowboys.

So.

Jones (this will be hard or impossible for most some people to comprehend) believes he sets the bar as high or higher than any other general manager in the National Football League. I am certain he completely believes failure to achieve the goals he sets for the team himself is due to other people, not him.

Narcissism.

I read the title first as "Jerry is AT the bar".
I still can't not read it that way.

This just isnt true. This is a media driven thing. If anything Jerry's history shows that he does measure on wins and losses and has fired coaches quickly and made moves in the draft and FA too quickly. About 6 years ago JJ self reflected and saw that his issues lied with in himself and that is when he allowed others to start making overall decisions in the organization.

Ultimately, Jerry blames himself for being a bad GM and now giving these guys the tools to win.

Also no one wants to hear it but Garrett has a winning record over his time here. Funny how most posters would get that trivia question wrong. He has plenty of flaws but the overall direction of the franchise is upward.

I think Jerry doesn't have a bar and thats the problem. He's content with fielding competitive yet ultimately flawed teams. The most important thing is that he's having fun and enjoying himself.

Hmmm. I guess I missed all of those playoff wins. But I do get the wins like the last game last season when the Eagles gave it to us and we still only managed six points. We at least made the playoffs this year(probably), so that is upward, but playoff wins are what matters. And you can just look at the Jags and see that one year you can be up and the next down. Or you can just look at Jason's year to year record and see the same thing.

Jerry sets the bar slightly below the Schottenheimer line. Y'all remember the coach whose teams were good in the regular season, but mostly one and done in the playoffs? His bosses weren't nearly as forgiving for his post season failures. I guess he should have worked for Jones.

Baby Ruth...

Jerry’s constant feeling that we are a few pieces away keep him from ever knowing what the bar is. He always thinks this team is close to contending.

..yes they are Bob. Very capable team. Get ready for another 5 game winning streak. :starspin:

Marty Schottenheimer was a great coach...in the regular season. His teams were always “relevant” except when it counted most. And as you said, because he always worked for owners who maintained a high bar of excellence, he never had as many years as Garrett has had.

Garrett has convinced/sold Jerry and Stephen on the "process". He is Gepetto and pulls both of their strings.
