I still find it amusing that anyone on a message board can evaluate backup offensive lineman in preseason by simply reacting to what they see on TV.
Sure, you can note the obvious when a guy gets completely manhandled. But other than that, what do you use as a judge of talent?
Do you know what the proper footwork is? Do you know the specific blocking techniques that are being taught? Do you know each players assignment on any given play? Or do you just listen to the broadcasters and jump on the wagon?
Do you realize it typically takes three years for an offensive lineman to learn his trade in the NFL?
Do you realize how important cohesiveness is to the line? These backup players are playing next to different people almost every game in preseason. And do you think it's possible that the coaches put these players in certain one on one situations to see what they can do?
McQuistan to me looks like a guy with some very good athletic ability. Coaches have stated in the past that he is the most athletic o lineman we have. He hustles and gives good effort. To me, I think the mental part of the game is hurting him now. The little things, understanding situations, fundamental techniques. I don't think he is as bad as people make him out to be.
Free looks solid. Maybe a little on the weak side yet, but he will be a player for us.
Holland seems to be much more familiar with the offense. I still think he is only average as a pass blocker because of his limited athletic ability, but he has a good feel for the game. Long term, I still question his want to when it comes to his weight.
Preston didn't look out of place in the only game he played with a limited training camp under his belt. Looked like he move around well. He looks as though he has some pop in his hands.
Proctor, to me, is just not athletic enough. He is horrible in space and doesn't anchor all the time. That's why he is only a center.
Obviously the coaches see something in these guys that many here don't.
