Sometimes I wonder how Jerry became a billionaire.

Then I remember his father was rich and he came from money and buying the most popular American sports’ franchise in the world isn’t such a genius decision.
Jerry sold or leveraged everything he owned, including art and personal items to pay for the cowboys. 250 million, which is an insurmountable sum for anyone not in the .1%.

Fantastic business man, terrible football guy.

He bought the team for $140 million.

Regardless, my post was a bit of a potshot at even his “great businessman” moniker from a lot of the dumb stuff he says and his mostly futile stint as a winning GM. It’s not like he started from scratch, and buying any major sports franchise — let alone the Dallas Cowboys — is something most average or even above intelligence posters on this forum would do if they had the money.

My memory is bad and you are right about the 140M. Still out of reach for all but the wealthy.

Yup, a five-year extension incoming. Dak will have a new HC and OC. They will pay the price as well by 2025. I worry that Jerry actually believes that Dak is the centerpiece
I don’t think he does. If he did then why trade for Lance. We have an entrenched #2 in Rush and had an entrenched #3 in Grier. You don’t trade a 4th rounder for a 3rd string QB.

Who knows with Jerry but they can dump Rush after the season, his dead cap is only 625K for 2024 if I’m not mistaken. Lance will head to #2.

Im not sure he ever borrowed or received any funds from his parents? Maybe, he did but I've never read that before. It would be interesting to know. He did get the loan from the teamsters union for his first business which failed, I think.

I have to give him credit for taking great risks and dreaming big.

I’m not talking about how he became wealthy. He “gambled” on oil land leases and within a few years they increased ten times their value (or something like that) the last time I read about it, from which he gained the capital to buy the team without any other investors. I’m talking about his family being successfully business oriented and rather well off prior to him even starting his own businesses.

lol he had the nerve to use the “he’s a winner”
Narrative.

What’s he won Jerry?

Imagine being Dak hearing that. Like dude just played absolutely horrible and his boss is saying he's the best QB he's ever seen. The rest of the team has to be eye rolling so hard.

Jerry’s dad sold insurance. He had something like a State Farm office. They were well off but not wealthy. Jerry was an oil wildcatter who got lucky when a piece of dirt he bought struck oil. He built it into a nice business and became very wealthy by most anyone’s standards. He bought the Cowboys with bank loans by leveraging his assets. If the cowboys went belly up, he would have gone down with them. It was unusual at the time bc most NFL owners had other businesses and their team was just a side hobby not a primary source of income. So, Jerry was one of the poorest owners when he bought the team.

Jerry made a great investment.

Just ask him. He’ll tell ya.
Just imagine you are the owner of a business: Your CEO/COO is adequate, but his contract is up and your sure you can do better. But unfortunately no one else can or will work for you and do the job "adequately" ...for a lower price. Now that same CEO has a bad quarter ...or seems to have one every year. Yet...the customers want to know if they should invest in your business. What do you tell them? What you really feel?

Jerry is doing the only thing he can do in this situation as a "bitness man".
